Obituary of John J. Neufeld

God called his faithful servant home on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 2:20 a.m. at Concordia Hospital. He lived to be 95 years and 151 days old. Dad leaves to mourn his children: one son John (Marion) Neufeld and one daughter Martha (Elwyn) Stewart; grandchildren: Michelle (Arnhold) Neufeld; Debbie (Shawn) McMillan; Sheldon (Julie) Stewart; Kendra (Rhéau) Hébert; Jeremy (Christine) Stewart; great-grandchildren: Chrystalyn McMillan, Tighe McMillan, Gabrielle Neufeld, Simone Stewart, Devon Stewart; brothers Jake and Peter Neufeld; sisters Nettie Funk and Ann Keeting. Dad was born May 27, 1913 in Rosenheim School District into a family of 6 brothers and 3 sisters and was predeceased by his spouse Margaret and great grandson, Spencer Samuel Neufeld, parents, 4 brothers, 1 sister. Dad and Mom truly loved each other and that love endured during good times and bad, in sickness and in health, for more than 70 years. Dad lost the love of his life when mom passed away on June 10, 2005. Dad went to Winkler Bible School in the mid 50’s to prepare himself for “his calling”, which was to preach the gospel. In the fall of 1959, Dad joined the team at the Gospel Light Hour to broadcast the Low German messages on two radio stations at that time, which were CFQC Saskatoon and CFAM in Altona. During the 28 years and 5000 programs as speaker of the Low German radio program “Licht vom Evangelium”, Dad translated his Bible texts into Low German and stored those translations in carefully indexed files. In 1983, MB Communications and Wycliffe signed an agreement to complete the New Testament translation. Wycliffe provided Dad with an editorial assistant to help with the translation and typing. In May 1986, while celebrating his 73rd birthday, Dad finished translating the last verse of Revelation. Now, after hundreds of years of reading the scriptures in German, many Mennonites finally have God’s Word in their own everyday language. “Daut Niehe Testament” (English translation for “the New Testament”) is now in Plautdietsch (Low German) and was published by the MB conference publishing house, Kindred Press in Jan 1988. Dad was given the first copy off the press of that Bible. The Low German Bible met the needs of thousands of Low German speaking Mennonites, some of whom live in Canada, the United States, but most of whom live in Mexico, Paraguay, Belize and Bolivia. In addition to translating the New Testament, Dad also translated the Psalms and Proverbs into the Low German Language and recorded these on cassette tapes and CD’s. By far, Dad felt that his greatest accomplishment was his work with the Wycliffe Bible Society to translate the New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs into the Low German language. He and mom spent many winters just outside of Tucson at the Summer Institute of Linguistics. Together, they worked as a team with their secretary, making sure that the WORD of GOD was translated correctly. Mom & Dad traveled with their trailer all over Arizona, Texas and Manitoba. Dad never got lost because Mom read the map and told Dad well in advance the road they needed to take. They were happiest when they were fishing up north with their buddies or travelling across the USA and Canada with their trailer. Many campfires were enjoyed with coyotes howling in the distance and Dad playing his harmonica or guitar singing campfire songs, like the Red River Valley. The family would like to pay special thanks to the nurses and care-givers at Donwood Palliative Care who treated Dad with so much dignity and respect. We have witnessed your warm hugs to him - your kindness to Dad will not be forgotten. DAD You ran a good race and are now in Heaven with mom. You were a good and faithful servant. We will cherish your memory. The funeral service will be held Friday, October 31, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Eastview Community Church, 3500 Devries, Wpg, with viewing at the church prior to the service. Interment at La Salle Cemetery. If friends so desire donations may be made to Donwood Manor Personal Care Home, 171 Donwood, Wpg, MB R2G 0V9
