Obituary of Mary Plett

Peacefully, on Sunday, November 16, 2008 surrounded by her family, Mary Plett passed away at Bethesda Place, at the age of 84. Left to cherish her memory are, her husband Henry of 60 years, two sons, one daughter and grandchildren: Ken (Laura) - Jeremy & Kara; Joyce - Kesstra & Shanley, (George); Loren – Jaylen; three brothers, Abe (Annie) Brandt, Dave (Mary) Brandt, Arnold (Gertie) Brandt, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, four brothers and one sister. Mom was born in Ile Des Chenes, December 29, 1923 to George and Elizabeth Brandt. Like many of her generation, her childhood and youth were times of hardship and poverty; thus only allowing her to complete grade 7, though she would have loved to continue much further with her education. She never gave up her love for knowledge and continued to read throughout her life; keeping many articles and magazines to read “for later, when I’ll have the time”. As a young girl, she helped out at home and supported her parents. Her creative talents were expressed through her love of sewing, from sewing men’s suits to wedding dresses. She was extremely skilled with any mending, often able to make items look like new. Mom was baptized July 19, 1940. At the age of 23, she decided to take a seasonal job in a tomato-canning factory in Kitchener, Ontario. On June 27th, 1948, she married our father, Henry Plett and settled in Riverton. Mom spent her married life as a homemaker, living on a farm. Mom enjoyed baking, gardening and canning. She was quick to help out with the field work. Mom made many trips to Blumenort to look after her mother, her only sister and her brothers, whenever the need arose. Mom would always be ready to try new things – always taking every chance she had for a ride on the Ferris Wheel, to jumping on the back of a motorbike, and at times this included some ideas her children “cooked up” as well; like the time we convinced her to try our “new swing” idea, which included a rope with small wooden seat, tied to the rafters of our machine shed, then climbing into the bucket of our Case tractor which we then raised as high as possible. She would then hang onto the rope and jump out of the bucket, this created loud hollering and laughter from us children, and though she did say it has been fun she never did agree to the “new swing” idea again. Life on the farm always brought adventure. In the fall of 1980, our parents moved to Blumenort, where Mom lived until more care became necessary, thus requiring a move to Bethesda Place on July 4, 2007. Mom enjoyed her time at Bethesda Place, especially time spent with staff, finding humor in daily situations. She looked forward to Dad’s daily visits. Her last days were peaceful. The family would like to express a thank you to all the staff at Bethesda Place for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honour of her love for children, to Children’s Ministry, Blumenort EMC. A celebration of her life will be held at Blumenort Evangelical Mennonite Church on Thursday, November 20 at 2:00 p.m. with interment at the EMC Cemetery.
