My loving husband, our father, grandfather and great grandfather, Jonas Toews was called Home on December 16, 2008 at 9 p.m. at Bethesda Hospital, Steinbach. He was born October 20, 1926 at Blumenort, Manitoba to Henry P.and Margaret Toews. He spent his childhood at Greenland, receiving his education at Blumenhof and Mountezuma Schools. He gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ (Mennonite) on May 30, 1940. This faith was precious to him and he upheld it to the end. Dad took responsibility as a young boy, working on the family farm. He farmed with horses, worked on thresher gangs and cut wood at pulp camps. He was a person who loved to work. He married me, Tina Penner on June 10, 1951 at Greenland. We enjoyed 57 years together. We built a small house on his parents' yard and then in 1954 moved to a farm beside the Whitemouth River at Elma, Manitoba. We were blessed with six sons and three daughters. Dad was a man of integrity, teaching us Christian principles. We have fond memories of him reading the Bible, telling us Bible Stories, having morning and evening devotions and singing with us as a family. He was involved in Gospel Tract Work, Summer Bible School and Gospel Tent Meetings. Dad enjoyed learning: translating German, mastering the computer, compiling genealogies. He instilled a love of reading in all of us. Those left to cherish Dad's memory are his beloved wife, Tina, and children: Rowena and Ed Friesen, Lindley and Arlene, Elma, Mb; Darryl and Roselyn, Gilmer and Bev, Hadashville, Mb; Sheldon and Kathy, Pine River, Mb; Margie and Arlin Penner, Gerald and Maxine, Lorrie and Warren Dueck, Orlan and Krista, Elma, Mb.; 45 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Bertha Friesen and Caroline and Dan Penner and one sister-in-law, LuEtta Toews. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and three sisters. Viewing and chapel services will be at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Dr, Steinbach, MB starting at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 19, 2008. Funeral Services will be held at Whitemouth Mennonite Church, Elma, Manitoba on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Special thanks are extended to Dr Maksymiuk, Dr Krahn, and Dr Spence.
