Obituary of Anna Funk

Peacefully on December 18, 2008 and after a long struggle, Anna Funk entered into the loving hands of the Lord at the Menno Home For The Aged in Grunthal, Manitoba at the age of 94. Anna was predeceased by her parents Jacob and Anna Ginter, husband Cornelius R. Funk; brothers John, Abe, Peter, Diedrich, Jake Guenther and Charlie Guenther; sister Agnes Funk, daughter Elsie Kehler, grandson Ryan Senkiw, great-grand daughters Daniela Zinghini and Hope Koop. She was also the last of the brothers, sisters and in-laws of her husband’s family. Left to cherish her memory are her children Anna Tafovic, Peter (friend Roxanne), Jacob (Emilie), Cornelius (Susan), Clarence (Eva), Maria Senkiw (Wayne) and son-in-law Albert Kehler (Linda), 19 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, their spouses and families, sisters Mary Marsden, Lena Ehlert and Debra Soloway, sisters-in-law Evelyn Ginter, Goldie Guenther and Agnes Ginter, and several nieces and nephews. They were all special to her. Anna was born in Grunthal, Manitoba June 26, 1914, was the oldest of eleven children and was baptized upon confession of her faith. She began working at age 16 as a telephone operator. She then married Cornelius R. Funk on November 2, 1933 and became a mother to seven children. They purchased and lived on a dairy farm east of Grunthal until building a home in the town of Grunthal in 1972. She spent the majority of her years as a housewife and homemaker and later, once her children were grown she worked in the laundry at the Menno Home in Grunthal. Anna’s formal education ended after Grade 8 but she remained an avid reader and loved doing crossword puzzles. She would often be cooking and stirring a pot with one hand while holding and reading a book in her other. When she could no longer see to read she continued to enjoy her stories through books on tape. Anna loved cooking and baking and always had a huge vegetable garden. In the summer, company would inevitably end up in her large flower garden as well. She also loved needlework and crocheted afghans for each of her children and grandchildren. Anna was president of the Ladies Sewing Circle and participated in several fund raising bazaars for the Menno Home. At the age of 68 Anna obtained her drivers license and maintained her independence for a number of years after the passing of her husband January 30, 1983. She enjoyed traveling and took trips throughout Canada, the Black Hills, eastern United States as well as a European tour. She was forced to slow down in her later years as her failing eyesight and poor health took over. Anna enjoyed the many visitors she received and had a remarkable memory, entertaining her guests for hours with stories of her youth and recollection of family history. Anna has made many friendships and has touched many lives throughout her 94 years. She will be loved and missed by many. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Abe and Mary Funk for all of their help and kindness towards Anna after her husband’s passing. They were wonderful friends and would check on her to make sure she was O.K. When she couldn’t get around on her own anymore they would pick up and deliver her daily mail and regularly bring her groceries. The family would also like to thank the Menno Home staff for their care, compassion and patience over the last year. Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel on Sunday, December 21 at 7:00 with at devotional at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel on Monday, December 22 at 2:00 p.m. with interment at Grunthal Cemetery.
