It is with great sadness and very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend Peter Barkman on Friday, February 27, 2009. Left to mourn are his children Bev (Bill) Sofroniuk, Bonnie (Curt) Neufeld, Rachel (John) Reimer, Jen (Don) Audette; grandchildren Madisson, Michelle, Colby, Cassidy, Ashley, Alyssa, Austin, Arik, Caleb, Braden and Nadia; brothers Frank (Helen), Abe (Mary), Albert (Tina), his sisters Annie (Abe), Helen (John), Kathy (Pete), Trudy, brothers-in-law John and Jake (Mary) and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Dad was predeceased by his wife Mary, his parents, sisters Margaret, Mary and Minna and many close friends and relatives. Dad was born in Blumenort, Manitoba on March 15, 1945 to Peter and Gertrude Barkman. His mother died the day he was born. After his mother’s death he was cared for by his mother’s family. Dad’s Aunt Margaret and Aunt Mary have always been very close to him more like second mothers than aunts. His father was remarried to Anna and Dad went back to live with his family. Dad was baptized on May 9, 1982 at the Steinbach United Church. Dad was diagnosed with cancer in July of 2008. It was not an easy battle for him, but he was not a man who would complain a lot. The day before he passed away, when the nurses would ask how he was feeling, He would just say good. When asked if he had any pain or needed anything, he would just say no he was good. He was a quiet man who did not do a lot of talking. Dad was very grateful to the kind nurses at Ste. Anne Hospital who took such good care of him in his last days. The warm blankets and loving words meant a lot to him and I am sure he would want us to thank them. Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach on Monday, March 2, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 3, at 11:00 a.m. at the Evangelical Mennonite Church, Blumenort, MB with interment at the Blumenort EMC Cemetery.
