Obituary of Mary Driedger

On Tuesday, March 24, 2009, Jesus took Mom to heaven to be reunited with Dad who went before her 6 months earlier. Mom was born on July 25th, 1925 to Agenetha and Peter Schroeder on a farm near Lowe Farm, Man. Her father passed away when she was almost 3 years old. Her mother was left to look after 3 young children, Sarah, Mary and Dick. In 1934 her mother remarried and they joined with a family of 7. In the next several years 4 more children were added to the family. Mom attended elementary school till she was 13. In the following years she spent her winters at home and her spring, summers and falls working as a maid. In 1948 she took a bus trip with Uncle Henry and Aunt Sarah to Ontario to work in a cannery. In Jan. 1949 Mom went to Morden to spend some time at Aunt Sarah’s. It was here she met Dad. After a brief courtship they were married on June 19th. They lived in Morden for 11 years and then moved out to a farm near Dominion City. Mom enjoyed life very much even though life on the farm meant lots of work for her. She had a large vegetable garden and besides tending it and teaching us kids to help in it she was out in the barn milking cows and feeding livestock. She also spent many hours late into the night at her treadle sewing machine turning out awesome clothes for us to wear. Shirts, blouses, dresses, pants, suits and even wedding gowns took shape under her nimble fingers. She taught us to do our work well and to enjoy it. She also made sure we were very well fed and lived up to her reputation as a wonderful cook and baker. Dad was spoiled with her apple pies and was sure there were none as good as hers. In 1997 Mom and Dad moved off the farm and retired back in Morden. During their retirement they traveled to France, the United States, the East Coast and did a lot of touring around with their own car. Dad loved to be on the move. About 5 years ago Mom became ill with dementia. Dad eventually took over the cooking and cleaning and looked after her. After Dad passed away in Sept. Mom lived at Boundary Trails hospital till her move to Meadowood Manor PCH in late Feb. Her children, Anita and Neil Friesen, Kathy, Margi and Dennis Friesen, Shirley and Alex Toth, Dave, Rick and Emily, Ken and Sheryl, her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, sisters and brothers, and nieces and nephews will remember her with love. We, her family, will always cherish the joy and inspiration that she brought to our lives. Mom, we are rejoicing with you in the new body and mind that God has given you. The Funeral Service will be held at the Morden EMM Church, 610 1st St, Morden on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. with interment at Chapel Cemetery, Morden. If friends so desire donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
