George Funk of Steinbach passed away peacefully at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach on Friday, March 27, 2009, at the age of 87 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Agatha Funk, brothers Jacob and Peter, sister Betty and great granddaughter Shaniece. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Helen, his children, Irwin, Erna (Keith) Taylor, Danny (Bridget), Rose (Ivan) Sobering, grandchildren Jack Malin, Blake (Sarah) and Dallas Funk, Teri (Wayne) Fuchs, Ryan Taylor, Cameron (Judy) Funk, Curtis (Brie) Funk, Michele and Melissa Sobering, 9 great grandchildren; sister Anne (Peter) Enns, brothers John (Erna) and Cornie (Eva), as well as nieces and nephews. George was born in Greenland, Manitoba on February 21, 1922. He worked and lived on his parent’s farm until he married Helen Blatz on Oct 15, 1948. They lived in the Greenland and New Bothwell area until the early 1960’s. They moved to South America for a short time, returning to Blatz Road where they lived until they moved to Steinbach in 1984. Besides his early farm days, George worked at the Bothwell cheese factory, the Winnipeg sugar beet plant, and at Borger Construction in Winnipeg for over 25 years until he retired as a supervisor in 1982. Dad’s hobby was working on their yard at home and being fussy about his cars. He always liked to be proud of his garden where he spent many hours tilling and hilling his potatoes while he could. He remained at home until a few days before his passing and the family would like to extend a special thanks to the special care of Dr Kaethler, and Palliative Care Nurse Debbie Krahn, and the comforting by the nursing staff during his short stay at Bethesda Hospital. The family also wishes to express appreciation and gratitude for all the prayers, encouragement, cards and expressions of sympathy received from family and friends. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Bethesda Hospital Foundation, Steinbach, Manitoba. The funeral service for George Funk will be held Tuesday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach with burial at Randolph Cemetery. Viewing will be at Birchwood Funeral Chapel Monday, March 30 at 7:00 p.m. with devotional at 7:30 p.m., and at the funeral chapel prior to the service.
