Obituary of Katharina (Tena) Wiebe

Katharina (Tena) Wiebe, age 86, passed away peacefully at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Steinbach on April 5, 2009. Tena was born in Horndean, MB on May 31, 1922. She married David H. Wiebe on November 26, 1942. Together they had 5 children: Ed, Barbara, Mars, Lyn and Ken. Tena was raised in Lowe Farm, MB, and spent her adult years together with her husband as New Tribes missionaries in Bolivia. Her long time interest in medicine resulted in establishing several clinics to serve Bolivians and Mennonites, as well as training nurses. This ministry allowed her to lead thousands of people to Christ. She and Dave also planted countless churches, worked in a boarding school, served as hosts to NTM personnel and discipled many new believers. Her selfless dedication to the physical and spiritual health of those she ministered to, knew no end. Retiring to Canada in 1990 due to Tena’s health, they first lived in B.C. and then settled in Steinbach. Tena is survived by her husband, Dave (Rest Haven Nursing Home), 2 brothers: Jake Bergen and Pete Thiessen, and 3 sisters: Sue Johnston, Agatha Harder, and Agnes Allen, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She will also be sorely missed by her 5 children: Ed (Jane) Wiebe, Barbara Eddy, Mars (Harry) Enns, Lyn (Jim) Avery, and Ken (Cindy) Wiebe. Left to mourn her passing are her grandchildren: Shane, Laura, Josh, Tamara, Priscilla, Prisma, Michael and Rachael, as well as great grandchildren: Gavin, Maneesha, Nadia, Taylor, Jesse and Cassandra. Tena was predeceased by her parents: Jacob P. and Maria Bergen, 2 brothers and 3 sisters. Tena spent the last five and a half years of her life at Rest Haven Nursing Home, where she brought joy to staff and visitors alike with her ever-ready smile, sparkling eyes and endless stories of God’s love and the adventures on which He led her. The family wishes to express their profound gratitude to the Rest Haven staff, for their love and exceptional care. Our thanks and appreciation also goes out to family and friends for their prayers and expressions of sympathy. Special thanks to our family friends, Margaret Toews and Mary Ann Smith, both for their sacrificial love and tender care for our mom, Tena, as well as their generous support and friendship to our family. The funeral service was held Monday, April 6, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach with ash interment to be held at a later date. If friends so desire donations may be made to New Tribes Mission of Canada, Box 707, Durham, ON N0G 1R0
