Obituary of Sara Schellenberg

Sadie Schellenberg, 83, of Steinbach, passed away Saturday, June 18th, 2011 at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. Mom was born March 20, 1928 in the Rosenfeld area to Peter and Katherine Klassen. Growing up in the Rosenfeld area with 15 brothers and sisters, Mom loved the closeness of her family and the fun times they shared together. As a child Mom always kept busy with activities she loved, like drawing, coloring, painting or sitting on the well with her sister Jessie singing ‘you are my sunshine.’ She loved playing soccer and baseball with her siblings, there was certainly enough of them to make their own team, or at school where her position was third base. In fact, it was at a baseball game in 1945 where Mom met Dad. They courted for two years and married on July 13, 1947. Mom was a hard worker. As a single woman she worked as a live in housekeeper in Winnipeg and Rosenort. After marrying, and with a young family Mom worked as a cook at the road construction camps that Dad was working on and in the winter months took Neil and Sadie as babies to the logging camps to be with Dad and to cook. Mom and Dad also had a dairy farm and when Dad was away working, Mom continued to do all the chores with the help of Neil, Sadie and Eve. Shortly after the youngest two children Julius and Sylvia were born they moved to Mitchell, even though there were no farm chores, Mom’s work was not done. Julius and Sylvia with their adventurous nature kept her hopping. She dressed them in red so they would be easier to spot. Mom took every opportunity to work together with Dad, gathering eggs; dry walling, insulating and later continued to do the same together with her children, whether in their homes, farms or wherever needed. Mom also enjoyed a good party whether hosting or attending, she and Dad loved hosting barn dances and wiener roasts where she was known for her donuts and chocolate cake. Birthdays were important to her and she did not want her own forgotten. She would remind us by saying, “It’s almost the first day of spring”, and she was of course talking about March 20th. For us kids she would often bake a chocolate birthday cake with money in it, what a treat! Mom enjoyed travelling. She and Dad took many trips together and with us kids. One of her last trips with Dad was a mission trip to Jamaica which was a defining moment in both their lives. After Dad’s passing, Mom continued to serve in many ways, with her gift of hospitality her home was always open to all and it didn’t seem to matter how many people would come somehow there was always enough food and love for everyone. She was always willing to babysit her grandchildren and great grand-children. She was a Mom and Grandma and friend to anyone who needed, not just to her family. Mom enjoyed life and was very involved with the Mitchell Senior Centre and the seniors bowling league. In fact, she had her best game in the last month of her life. She had bowled a turkey, which is 3 strikes in a row and her score was over 200. She placed a call to each one of her kids to brag. She loved playing cards with her family, whether it was her siblings, children or grandchildren. Mom was a very positive person and always there to support her family and friends with whatever was needed. She took great care to develop and nurture her personal bond with each of her kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to cook for us and knew the favorites we all had. Bragging about her family continued even on her death bed to the hospital staff. Although Mom endured many losses in her life, she always remained hopeful for the future. She had a great concern for her family that they would all meet in heaven. Mom’s faith developed throughout her lifetime, she was baptized at the Wiedenfeld CMC in 1947 and continued to grow strong. She relied on God to be her main support and was confident she would be welcomed by the arms of Jesus. “Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13 “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up just as in fact you are doing.” Thessalonians 5:11 The funeral service for Sadie Schellenberg will be held Wednesday, June 22 at 2:00 p.m. at the Chortitzer Mennonite Church, 479 Hanover, Steinbach, with burial at Rosengard Cemetery. Viewing will be at Chortitzer Mennonite Church Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., with a devotional at 7:30 p.m. Donations may be made to The Lung Association, 629 McDermot Avenue; Wpg., MB R3A 1P6.
