Harold Unger, of Steinbach, age 83, passed away at Bethesda Hospital on May 3, 2009 of cancer. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife Betty (nee Giesbrecht), his daughters and their families - Shirley and Mark Fox, Lindsey and James, Caleb, Emma; Valrea and Edwin Peters, Lyle and Maneesha; Bev Unger. Harold is also survived by his sisters Lottie and Peter Guenther, Veleda Goulden, Evangeline Rempel; and Betty’s siblings. Harold was predeceased by one daughter, Rosalie in infancy and one granddaughter, Faye Peters. Harold was born August 31, 1925 in Steinbach. He married his sweetheart Betty on August 21, 1949 - they would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this year. Harold co-owned Unger Barber & Jewellers with his father, and later with Betty. Everyone was welcomed with Wrigley’s spearmint gum, a cold bottle of pop and a smile. One of Harold’s dreams was to farm. He was able to do this while serving as a Conscientious Objector and later, on a hobby farm he owned with Frank Klassen where he spent endless enjoyable hours playing with his “blondes” (Belgian horses). Harold was part of the Southeast Draft Horse Association and participated in parades, trail rides and loved the sing-alongs around the campfire. Harold served as Steinbach Town Councillor for 31 years. During that time he enthusiastically worked on a variety of committees including Public Works, Southeast Veterinary Clinic, and acted as President for Manitoba Association of Urban Municipalities. Harold was active in the community in other capacities over the years. He loved hockey and acted as coach/manager for the Huskies in the ‘50s and ‘60s, was a member of Hanover Agricultural Society, a founding member of the Heritage Village Museum and Steam Club. His grandchildren were his pride and joy and Harold was an avid fan of anything they were involved in be it hockey, lacrosse, soccer, band concerts, and choir programs. He always wanted to know what was new in their lives, their studies, travels or work. In his later years, Harold continued to enjoy morning coffee at Frantz, watching the threshing at the Museum, attending local hockey games, spending time with friends in the Bridgepark common room and going for drives to check out the fields. Despite his failing health, Harold was able to ride along on the combine with his grandson Lyle this past November. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Bible Church , 290 First Street, Steinbach, MB. Interment at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach.
