Obituary of John Krahn

John Krahn April 9, 1935— June 6, 2009 It is with sadness and yet rejoicing that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John Krahn, on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the age of 74 years. Dad was born on April 9, 1935 to John F and Margaret Krahn of Grunthal, MB. He was one of six children. He grew up in Grunthal and married Edna Bergen of Rosenfeld, MB on July 20, 1957. They were blessed with three wonderful children. Dad worked for the City of Winnipeg, starting with the menial job of pushing a broom and continued to work hard to become the supervisor of Works and Operations for 35 years. After his early retirement in 1990 his drive to work hard did not stop. Dad enjoyed woodworking in his shop near Kleefeld. He loved making bird houses and feeders for the many birds that visited their country home. This provided many hours of bird watching for both Mom and Dad. After a few years we noticed some subtle changes in Dad’s personality and in 2001 he was diagnosed with the mind altering disease of Alzheimers. Over the next eight years Mom has been a faithful and constant caregiver to Dad. God will bless you richly for this Mom. After it became too difficult for Mom to take care of Dad at home, she made the difficult decision of placing him in Bethesda Place in November of 2005. He was transferred to the Rest Haven Nursing Home in June of 2008, so he could be nearer to where she lived at Woodhaven Manor. Dad passed away on Saturday morning at the Bethesda Hospital due to complications. He is survived by his loving wife, Edna, one son Brian (Annette) of Mitchell, MB, two daughters, Teresa (Marvin) Kroeker of Lloydminster, AB and Kim (Norman) Fehr of Mitchell, MB, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren as well as by three sisters: Margaret (Otto) Funk of Niverville, Mary (Abe) Funk of Grunthal and Helen Penner of Steinbach; two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law and their families He was predeceased by his parents, John F and Margaret Krahn, two siblings in infancy and a brother-in-law, Jake Penner. Also by his parents-in-law Peter H and Helen Bergen of Altona, MB. The funeral will take place on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Chortitzer Mennonite Church, 57 Willow St., Mitchell, MB with interment at the church cemetery. Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, June 9, from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. with a devotional to follow and one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Menno Home. We, the family, would like to express a heartfelt thank-you to the staff of Bethesda Place, and Rest Haven Nursing Home and to the nurses at the Bethesda Hospital for their wonderful care of our Dad. Thank you also to all our families and friends for their faithful love, prayers and support. God Bless you all.
