Obituary of Henry Fernsel

Peacefully, on Sunday, June 2l, 2009 at Bethesda Place in Steinbach, our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather went home to his eternal rest with family at his side, at the age of 99 years. Left to cherish his memory are daughters, Eileen (Herb), Gladys (Ron) and Pat (Claus), grandchildren Wayne (Shelley), Teresa (Larry), Barb (Mike), Sherry (Mike), and Lori (Lindsay), great-grandchildren Erin (Ryan), Ian, Jamie, Sara, Rebecca, Adam, Justin, Ryan, Elise, Jordan, Zach, Ben and Emma, great-great-grandchildren Camryn, Holden, Jacob and Jordyn, and numerous nephews and nieces. Dad was predeceased by Emma, his beloved wife of 49 years, brother Karl, and parents Maria and Carl Miller. Born in Sternenfelds, Germany on February 26, 1910, Dad immigrated to Canada in 1927 at the age of 17. Trained as a tailor, he went to work as a farm labourer in Manitoba. Dad was a man of amazing talents: gold mining in northern Ontario, operating a lumber mill, farming, carpentry, and had a wealth of experience and expertise in bridge construction. Retiring fully at age 75, he took up gardening, became a great cook, and continued to pursue his love of the outdoors: fishing, berry and mushroom picking, and going for drives through the countryside noting the changes taking place over the years. Dad was a very caring person and family and friends were always most important in his life. He left us his wisdom, his dedication to and love for his family, his determination to go on in good times and bad, and his ever present sense of humour as guideposts and memories for us to follow and build on. The family would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to the staff at Cedarwood, Bethesda Hospital and particularly in Blueberry Bay at Bethesda Place, for their excellent care, compassion and kindness to Dad during his difficult times. Your loving care for Dad was a constant comfort and blessing. A celebration of Dad’s life will take place on Friday, July 3, 2009 at 2:00 p.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Steinbach with viewing prior to service. In lieu of flowers donations in Henry’s memory may be made to Bethesda Place, 399 Hospital St., Steinbach, MB R5G 0E6 or a charity of your choice.
