Obituary of Elizabeth Friesen

Elizabeth Friesen was born on March 23, 1912 in Schoenfeld, South Russia, to Johann and Anna Friesen (nee Driedger). In 1926 the family immigrated to Canada, settling in the Grunthal area. In 1931 she was baptized upon confession of her faith by Aeltester Franz Enns in the Grunthal Elim Church, where she remained a member her whole life. During her lifetime she worked at various places in Grunthal and Winnipeg, as well as spending much time caring for her elderly parents and other relatives. She was also very active in the Maria Martha Verein at church and loved volunteering at the MCC Community Thrift Shop. In 2004 Elizabeth moved into the Grunthal Menno Home. Several years later she required surgery for a fractured hip from which she made a remarkable recovery, giving her a few more relatively active years. Late Friday evening, July 10, 2009, Elizabeth passed away peacefully at the Grunthal Menno Home. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by one brother, John Friesen (Neta); two sisters: Margaret Boschman (George) and Anne Warkentin (Dave). She leaves to mourn one brother Abram (Marlies) of Fredericton, New Brunswick, extended family, and friends. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel and 2:30 p.m. at the Grunthal Menno Home, with interment at the Grunthal Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grunthal Menno Home Building Fund, Box 280, Grunthal, MB R0A 0R0. Special thanks to the Menno Home staff for their care and compassion.
