Obituary of Susanna Dueck

Susanna Dyck Dueck passed away on July 22, 2009 at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach at the age of 81 years. Mom was born May 21, 1928 into a Mennonite family living in the small village Kontinusfeld in the Molotschna Colony, Russia. There she lived with her family until the Second World War forced her and her family out of their country. They arrived in Germany where Mom and her mother and her sisters made their home for about four years. While living in Munich, Germany Mom was baptized into the Mennonite faith in 1946. She immigrated to Paraguay in 1947 together with her mother and two sisters. While living in Paraguay she met and married our Dad, Diedrich U. Dueck on July 13, 1948. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Canada and settled in Steinbach. After a few years in Steinbach they purchased a farm south of Steinbach where they raised eight children – four daughters and four sons. In 1991 Mom and Dad sold the farm and moved to an apartment on Lumber Avenue. There they had lots of time and opportunity to spend with their grandchildren. Mom loved it when the grandchildren would come to visit. She would bake buckets and buckets of grandma cookies so that each grandchild was able to take some home with them. After Dad passed away, Mom moved to Fernwood. Here Mom made many new friends, enjoying visiting and puzzling in the sun room. Mom worked a number of places in Steinbach, but none was as enjoyable as when she was employed by the Mennonite Museum. For many years she was the head cook of the Livery Barn Restaurant. Never had the soup, vereneki and brown bread been as delicious as when Mom was Head Cook. Mom was active in her church in the Ladies Mission Group where many many blankets were sewn for missions. She loved doing hands on projects for missions and every project was sent out with prayer. Every Sunday you could see her sitting in her favorite pew until her illness forced her to attend church via the radio. Mom loved reading the Word and truly lived what she read. Mom loved reading – all books in general. Many an evening one could find her reading her latest book until the wee hours of the morning. She loved learning, which could be seen in the variety of books that she read. In 2002 Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Even after surgery and various methods of treatment the cancer continued to spread through her body. Even though her body deteriorated over the years she continued to enjoy her family, friends, quilting projects, and lived a quality life in spite of this disease. After a long and courageous struggle she closed her eyes for the last time here on earth with her children by her side. Mom will lovingly be remembered by her children Adina (George) Boschman, son-in-law Dan Hiebert, Ruth (Wayne) Stewart, Elma (Garnet) Isaac, Bernie (Darlene), David (Margaret), Robert (Janine), Jim (Lynn), 18 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Mom is survived by two sisters Lena Reimer and Tina Doerksen. Besides her parents, Mom was predeceased by her husband Diedrich U. Dueck and her daughter Shirley Hiebert. We thank all of Mom’s home care workers at Fernwood, Dr. Toews, the nursing staff at the Bethesda Hospital and all her many friends who spent time with her. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 27, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Mennonite Church, 422 Main Street, Steinbach.
