Obituary of Helena Dyck
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Helena L. Dyck age 76 at St. Boniface General Hospital on June 14, 2007.
She was born December 14, 1930 in Rosengard, MB to Diedrich and Maria Ginter. Helen is survived by three daughters, four sons and 16 grandchildren: Linda (Will) Klassen of Chilliwack, BC, Danny (Rose) Dyck of Steinbach, Harold Dyck of Kleefeld, MB, Clarence (Barb) Dyck of Mitchell, Cathy (Lloyd) Pachal of Steinbach, Erna Moir of Winnipeg, and Richard Dyck of Kleefeld. She is also survived by four brothers, two sisters and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Wilhelm in April 2006, her father Diedrich in 1983 and her mother Maria in 1986. She was also predeceased by four brothers and one sister, two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
Mom met our Dad while working on a beet field in Hanover. She was baptized in June of 1952 and married Wilhelm Dyck on Sept 28, 1952 in the Chortitzer Mennonite Church. The summers were spent in the largest garden ever seen and canning endless jars of fruit and vegetables for her family. In the winter she combed sheep’s wool to make her own blankets. Alongside this she helped Dad run the farm and raise the children. She made simple meals consisting mostly of potatoes and borscht.
They sold the farm in 1994 and moved into Fernwood Place shortly thereafter. There she made many new friends and spent countless hours in the puzzle room putting puzzles together. She also spent her time crocheting and knitting dozens of slippers, mitts, toques and scarves. About once a year she traveled to BC to visit her daughter and family. She was fascinated and drawn to the beauty of the mountains.
On May 9th she was taken to Bethesda Hospital and later transferred to St. Boniface Hospital. After several weeks at St. Boniface Hospital her health continued to get worse. Her faith in God, her spirit and her mind remained strong right until the day of her passing.
Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel on Sunday, June 17 at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held Monday, June 18 at 2:00 p.m. at the Chortitzer Mennonite Church, 479 Hanover, Steinbach with interment at the Grunthal Cemetery.
