Obituary of David R. Loewen
August 12, 2011 David R. Loewen, 92, died peacefully with his family by his side.
Dave was born in Steinbach on March 29, 1919 to Helena Ratzlaff and A.T. Loewen. The family moved to Janzen, Nebraska when he was four and returned to Steinbach six years later for A.T. to begin Loewen Funeral Home. Dave went to work for his uncle, C.T. Loewen at the lumberyard in 1936, eventually becoming sales manager for Loewen Windows. Dave was proud to have spent 46 years involved with the company that in his opinion, made the best windows in North America.
Dave married Elvina Toews on August 16, 1942 at the E.M.B. Church in Steinbach. Dave is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Elvina, and their children Russ (Marilyn) of Winnipeg, Wayne (Kathy) of Winnipeg, Sharon (Tom Prochnow) of Gilbert, Iowa; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Sara Prochnow Ojard (Nels), Evelyn, Thomas; David (Dawn) Prochnow, Noah; Jonathan (Emily) Prochnow, Owen; Shea Loewen; “grandchild” Carlisle (Leona) Wright, Daryn, Addison; his brothers, Bob (Mary), Glenn, Ray (Anne), LaVern (Marni), Waldy (Gloria), and sisters, Rachel (Johnny Reimer) and Matilda (Irvin Friesen), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dave was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Levi, Henry, Evelyn and Les.
Dave was a member of the E.M.B. Church (Cornerstone), holding many positions in the local congregation and also was E.M.B. conference treasurer for over 25 years.
Dave spent many hours in the last years “living in his memories” of a life filled with faith, family, friends, travelling, and frequent golf games. He enjoyed visiting with people, always leaving them with a smile with his jokes or stories; he especially enjoyed reliving his hole-in-one.
Dave was always eager to help others, and the family requests memorials to Mennonite Central Committee, 134 Plaza Drive; Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9 or Wycliffe Bible Translators, Receipts Office, 4316-10 Street NE, Calgary, AB
T2E 6K3.
