Obituary of Otto Funk

Otto Funk was born to Jacob N. H. Funk and Katherine Harms in the Altbergthal District and raised on a farm near Altona, MB, along with two brothers and two sisters. He met Margaret Krahn, from Grunthal, while working at Canadian Canneries in Grimsby, ON. They were married May 16, 1953 and made their home in Winnipeg.

Dad worked at Swifts Canada for 25 years, until the meat packing plant was closed down. After a brief period of unemployment, he was hired by bus manufacturer, Flyer Industries, and worked there for 13 years until his retirement. He always liked his jobs!

Dad loved people, and was always concerned about other people’s well-being; whether it was family, friends or co-workers. He had a great sense of humor, and loved to laugh and tell jokes.

Dad enjoyed being the “armchair coach” of his favorite sports teams: The Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Blue Jays. While he didn’t attend many games live, he watched as many as he could on TV and if there wasn’t any TV coverage, he would listen to them on radio.

Pepsi was his beverage of choice, and flowed through his veins! And don’t try to substitute any of that other “competitor” brand because he could easily taste the difference! This preference has been passed on to the next generations.

Dad and Mom enjoyed gardening together and maintaining their one acre property along Highway 59. They grew enough food to feed the family and sold extra vegetables and raspberries to people driving past.

Both Dad and Mom were very involved in the formation, and growth, of Word of Life Mission Church in Niverville. His faith in Jesus was very important to him, and he was the spiritual pillar in the church as well as at home. Dad and Mom are prayer warriors and would pray together daily for their children and grandchildren. He was always concerned that all of us would be together in Heaven some day, and that no one from the family would be missing when Jesus returned.

Dad taught us to love God, love each other, and love others. He also taught us by his example, in life, to be faithful in marriage, have strong work ethics and not to just think of ourselves, but rather look to those around us and do whatever we could to increase their quality of life. His legacy lives on in us!

He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Margaret, two daughters: Connie (Abass), Judy, and one son Jeff (Leona), 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Dad is predeceased by his oldest daughter, Carolyn, his parents, his brother Edwin, and sister Evelyn.

After retirement, they sold their rural property and were among the first residents in the very first phase of Silver Courts life lease facility in Niverville, where they enjoyed the interaction with all of the other residents, and where Mom still lives today. Life changed with the diagnosis of dementia, and when Mom could no longer care for Dad at their home in Silver Courts, he awaited placement in a care facility. After a brief period, he settled in at Heritage Trail Personal Care Home in Niverville, where he remained until he left us for his new heavenly home on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, with family at his bedside.

We would like to thank everyone who loved Dad, and cared for him extra specially at the Niverville PCH. Your efforts are appreciated! We would also like to thank everyone for their presence and support during this difficult time. For the cards, food, and especially prayers given on our behalf as we have journeyed down the road of dementia, and reached the end of Dad’s earthly road. We love you, Dad!

The funeral service for Otto Funk will be held at Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach, MB. Following the service everyone is invited to join the family for lunch. After our meal, interment will take place at the Hespeler Cemetery in Niverville at approximately 2:00 p.m.

In Dad’s memory, donations may be made to Gideon’s International, who place Bibles worldwide.
