Obituary of Lydia Wiens

Lydia Wiens (nee Nickel) Peacefully with her family by her side, Lydia Wiens, age 81, went home to be with her Lord on May 18th, 2006 at the Menno Home for the Aged in Grunthal, MB. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Peter A. Wiens in 1993. She was also predeceased by brothers Jacob (in infancy), John and Abe and sisters Sarah Rogers and Margaret Unrau. She leaves to cherish her memory six children: Bill (Pauline) Wiens, Louise Wiens, George (Chris) Wiens, all of Steinbach, Ken (Verna) Wiens of Grunthal, Mary Wiens of Winnipeg and James Wiens of Steinbach; nine grandchildren: Karen (Corey) Wiebe, Cynthia and Laurel Wiens, Jonathan (Lily), Eric and Justin Wiens, Kas (Lorraine), Kevin and Kurtis Wiens; three great grandchildren: Shaylene, Brycen and Karlana Wiebe. She is also survived by brothers and sisters: Annie Wiens, Nellie Hudson, Jake Nickel, Mary Hedison, Cornie Nickel, Pete Nickel, Henry Nickel and Helen Penner. Mom was born April 24th, 1925 in Herbert SK later moving to the McAuley/Willen, MB area, where she spent most of her childhood. She left home at age 14, to work as a maid in the McAuley area. After a brief time studying nursing in Winnipeg, she returned home. She was baptized upon her confession of faith on May 26th, 1945 in Oak Lake, and married Dad in Willen on August 9th, 1945. They farmed in the McAuley area for seven years, before moving to the Steinbach area in 1953, where they continued farming until retirement in 1974. In 1985 they bought a home in Steinbach, where Mom continued to live after Dad’s passing in 1993. Due to failing health, she moved to the Menno Home in 2000, where she remained until her passing. Mom will be remembered for her love of the outdoors, her beautiful flower gardens and knowledge of birds. She was an amazing baker, a gifted quilter and an avid reader. Her gentle nature, listening ear and caring heart came from her relationship with Jesus. She has now been set free from all earthly struggles to be with Dad in the presence of the Lord. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 23 at 2 p.m. at the Steinbach Mennonite Church, 345 Loewen Blvd, Steinbach with viewing prior to the service. Interment at the Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB If friends so desire donations may be made to Menno Home Foundation, Box 280; Grunthal, MB R0A 0R0
