Obituary of Linda Wiebe

Linda Wiebe Our beloved mother and grandmother, Linda Penner Wiebe was born on July 19, 1916 to Jacob M. and Margaret Barkman Penner in Greenland, Manitoba. While the song “Angels, Angels, Guide Me Home” was being sung to her, she peacefully passed into the presence of her Lord at Bethesda Hospital on November 20, 2009 reaching the age of ninety-three years. She met with sorrow early in life, losing her mother when she was only two years old, followed by her baby sister six months later. However, she soon received a new mother when her father married Anna Warkentin. Years later after Anna’s passing there was a further blending of the family when her father married Barbara Sobering Friesen adding six siblings to her family. At the age of seventeen she was converted and baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. The church was very dear to her and she was faithful to the end. On October 3, 1937 she was united in marriage to George Wohlgemuth. This union was blessed with two children, Margaret and Leslie. The first twelve years they lived in Blumenort, then relocated to the Greenland area. Their happy marriage was shattered when her husband and three year old son were tragically taken in a vehicle accident on February 9, 1956. She and her daughter continued to farm, also operating the telephone switchboard which was located in their house. On February 5, 1962 she married Henry Wiebe of Inman, Kansas. This union added one son Roy and two daughters Arlene and Phyllis to her family. The blending of the two families continues to be a blessing to us all. They lived in Kansas for a short while, then moved back to the farm in Greenland. They built their retirement home in Steinbach in 1981. Henry passed away on June 23, 1986. In 2002 she moved into the Stonebridge Villa, where she resided until her passing. As a family we have many precious memories of our mother and grandmother. She loved having company and her exceptional cooking talent resulted in many tasty dinners around her table. She enjoyed her coffee and even in her last days commented on how good it tasted. She was a gifted seamstress and did a lot of sewing for others. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were extra special to her. She took a keen interest in their everyday lives, and loved to give them gifts. During her years as a widow she was often lonely and she greatly appreciated the many that came to her house to visit or called for a chat. By her outgoing ways she made friends easily and will be missed by many that were touched by her life. In her last three weeks in the hospital she left us some precious memories, commenting many times how good everyone was to her, and how thankful she was that her way was so open to leave this world. She asked us to meet her in heaven and we look forward to the reunion one day. She will be lovingly remembered by two daughters; Margaret and Milton Warkentin, Cartwright, Manitoba; and Phyllis and Bev Toews, Abbotsford, British Columbia; one daughter-in-law; Dessie Wiebe, Osceola, South Dakota; one son-in-law; Wilbert and Linda Giesbrecht, Abbotsford, British Columbia; eighteen grandchildren; sixty-one great-grandchildren; thirteen great-great-grandchildren; three sisters Elda Giesbrecht, Steinbach, Manitoba; Tina Toews, Elma, Manitoba; Marlena and Alfred Goossen, Rosenort, Manitoba; five brothers; John and Evelyn Penner, Steinbach, Manitoba; Ed Penner, Grandview, Manitoba; Marvin and Luanna Penner, Elma, Manitoba; Martin and Grace Penner, Steinbach, Manitoba; and Jim Friesen, Winnipeg, Manitoba; three sisters-in-law; Lisa Barkman, Agnes Penner and Caroline Giesbrecht all of Steinbach, Manitoba; and a host of nieces and nephews who were very special to her.
