Obituary of Aganetha Toews

On Dec 25, 2009, at the age of 89, Aganetha (Wiebe) Toews of Steinbach passed away peacefully at Bethesda Hospital. Aganetha is survived by her children Ruth (Glen) Krentz, Christine (Will) Reimer, Joanna (Murray) Kehler, Brian (Deb) Toews, Gerald (Heather) Toews, 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She is also survived by 4 sisters, several in-laws and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Gustav, her parents, Peter and Justina Wiebe, 4 brothers and several in-laws. Our mother, Aganetha Toews, was born in Winnipeg, Sept 14, 1920 to Peter and Justina Wiebe. She was the oldest daughter of nine children and grew up mostly in the Steinbach area. She is an alumnus of the Steinbach Bible College, graduating with one of the first classes of the school. She was a curious person who loved to learn throughout life. She loved to read, closely followed her children’s travels with maps, developed a love for crossword puzzles in her mid 80s, loved watching various sports, and following current events. Mom was always ready to go, whether it was to a son’s hockey game, out for lunch, a grandchild’s graduation, concert, or sporting event. She was the oldest volunteer at the Steinbach Cultural Arts Centre. We have appreciated our mother for modelling a zestful life, for her priority of loving and caring for family, and for her commitment to lifelong education. Aganetha was a faithful member of the Evangelical Mennonite Church and cared deeply for the spiritual well being of her children and grandchildren. The funeral service will he held Saturday, January 2, at 11:00 a.m. at the Evangelical Mennonite Church, 422 Main St, Steinbach, with interment at Heritage Cemetery. Viewing will take place at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach on Friday, January 1, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., with a devotional at 7:30 p.m., and at the church prior to the service. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Union Gospel Mission, PO Box 1073; Stn. Main; Wpg., MB R3C 2X4 The family wishes to thank Dr Minnaar, Pastor Rick, and all the care givers at Fernwood and the Bethesda Hospital for their many acts of kindness and the comfort they brought to our mother.
