It is with sad hearts that we announce that Henry passed away early January 9, 2010. His battle with Parkinson’s is now over.., and he is with his Father in heaven. For this we as a family rejoice! He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Anne, and his three daughters, Bev (Randy), Judy, and Carolyn (Lowell), and his grandchildren Samantha, Matthew, Tanner Noah and Annika. His siblings Margaret, Frank (Nettie), Pete (Annie), Mary (Harold), Ben (Annie), Liz (Jake), Esther (Ken), Claire and sister-in-law Florence, sisters and brothers-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Peter W. Friesen, his mother, Elizabeth, and his brother, Jac. Henry was born on October 21, 1933 in the R. M. of Morris. He was baptized into the EMC church as a teenager. He attended school in Rosenort, and graduated from Mennonite Collegiate Institute. After completing Normal School, he furthered his education and received his B.A. and B. Ed. at the University of Manitoba. His teaching career spanned 37 years starting out in a one room school house in Menville, Manitoba, and thereafter spending the majority of his years as the Guidance Counsellor at Steinbach Regional Secondary School. He loved his job at the SRSS and made significant connections with many students. Students and staff fondly knew him as “H.K.”. Henry met his wife Anne in 1956 while volunteering for the Mennonite Central Committee. Together they had three daughters and enjoyed the addition of two sons-in-law. The grandchildren that followed were a source of delight for Henry and held a special place in his heart. He was very proud of his family and loved them dearly. He was a man of ideas and lived life fully. He was our trip planner, play house builder and story teller. He enjoyed meeting new people, and fostering established relationships. He loved the outdoors, spending many winter Sundays cross-country skiing in Sandilands. Henry’s faith, was based on God’s love and grace, and was lived out actively by looking out for others, and serving in whatever way he could. Community and church involvement were important to Henry. He volunteered in many capacities for the Steinbach Arts Council, Mennonite Heritage Village, Steinbach Ambulance Service and Steinbach MB Church. He completed two terms as a Steinbach city councillor. Many of Henry’s dreams were cut short by the onset and progression of Parkinson’s. Through the 15 year journey with Parkinson’s, he rarely complained, choosing instead to focus on the positive. The essence of his character was that of a gentle, optimistic, caring, energetic, and loving man. Friends and extended family have been a rich source of ongoing support to Henry and Anne, and each kindness extended was appreciated. The family is grateful for the care of Dr. Curtis Krahn, Dr. Wilfred Kaethler, the staff at Bethesda Rehab and NU2, all the nurses and health care aides at St. Adolphe, especially Nurse Angie. Viewing will be held at the Mennonite Brethren Church, 340 2nd St, Steinbach on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional to follow. The funeral service will be held Thursday, January 14 at 2:30 p.m. also at the Mennonite Brethren Church. Private family interment at Heritage Cemetery will take place prior to the service.
