In the early morning of Friday, January 29, 2010, Elizabeth (Betty) Kehler, passed away in her sleep while at home. She was born on September 12, 1927, to Abe F. and Anna Doerksen in the community of Ile des Chenes, and is survived by husband Peter, and four sons, Jack (Sally), Bryan (Myra), Gary (Ingrid) and Darryl (Irene), as well as nine grand children and four great grandchildren. All her siblings predeceased her. She also leaves numerous nieces and nephews, as well as countless friends. Mom and Dad were married in Niverville on September 25, 1947, and soon embarked on a rather short one-year stay in Paraguay. They returned to Manitoba, and lived in Ile des Chenes and then Winnipeg for several years, before purchasing the farm in Tourond. They farmed for 25 years and then retired to Steinbach. In retirement, Mom’s life transformed. The sons were all married and on their own, Dad was retired, and Mom then took the opportunity to get involved with many different pursuits. She volunteered with MCC and really enjoyed the company of the ladies in the once a month car pool, she provided German translation services for a great number of people who wanted to obtain a drivers license, she was active in church, she spent time with her grandchildren, and she was busier after retirement than before. She loved being busy. She was immensely proud of her first ever pay cheque which she received from the Province of Manitoba when she was hired as an official translator. She will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, her positive outlook on life, and her belief that there is good in everyone. She prayed every day for all of her family. Thanks to everyone for the many acts of kindness shown to us in the loss of our Mother. We do not sorrow as those who have no hope, but are assured to meet Mom again some day when time will be no more. The funeral service for Mom was held on Thursday, February 4th, 2010 at the Chortitzer Mennonite Church in Steinbach. Interment at Heritage Cemetery.
