Obituary of Grace Winnifred McAllister

Grace Winnifred McAllister passed away peacefully, at the age of 87, on Monday, April 5, 2010 at the Bethesda Place in Steinbach, and went straight into the arms of Jesus, whom she loved and served with all her heart. Grace was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on January 2, 1923 into a poor but very loving and godly home. She was raised by her parents to love and serve God and others and this is how she lived her entire life. At the age of 20, Grace’s mother became sick and for 10 years, Grace took care of her bed-ridden mother, her father and her two younger siblings. She met Lawrence at an Intervarsity meeting in Halifax, where he was stationed during World War II, and in 1944 they were married. Deeply in love for 65 ½ years, they were blessed with four children, 11 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. In 1961, Grace and Lawrence were transferred with the CSSM from New Brunswick to Winnipeg. As soon as they arrived, Grace wanted to start a Bible Club for the children in the area and the Happy Hour Bible Club was born, ministering to dozens of children in the Wolseley area of Winnipeg. Grace was an extrovert and had a real zest for life. She loved adventure and traveled with her husband all over the world. She was a wonderful homemaker, always baking cookies, helping her children with their homework, making sure they practised their piano, and using lots of coupons!! Grace enjoyed camping, playing the piano, going to concerts, public speaking, serving in her church, reading her Bible, handing out thousands of white Gideon New Testaments to graduating nurses, and playing with her grandchildren for hours at a time. She also loved music and playing games. Her two favourite things to do, when our family was together, were to sing hymns and worship songs (sometimes for an hour or more after dinner) and play games together. She also loved serving with the Canadian Sunday School Mission, alongside Lawrence, for over 35 years. During these years, she enjoyed telling stories at camps all across Canada, and led many children to Jesus. Grace will be remembered for her selflessness, always ensuring other’s needs were met before her own. Her greatest desire was that her children and grandchildren would come to know, love and serve Jesus as she did. The family wishes to thank the amazing tender and loving care that Grace received at Bethesda Place in Steinbach these past 5 years as she suffered with Alzheimer’s. To all of the nurses, doctors, aids, and other care-givers, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts, for loving our dearest mom, grandma, and wife. Grace is mourned by the love of her life, Lawrence, and by her children; son David and daughter-in-law Debbie and their sons, Nathan, Evan, and Stephen; son Lawrence and daughter-in-law Kay and their children Jennifer (husband, Chris, and their son Thomas) and Brett (wife, Deanna); daughter Grace and her children Tyler and Tori; son Ken and daughter-in-law Eunice and their children Timothy, Sarah, Adam, and Luke. The funeral service, celebrating the life of Grace Winnifred McAllister will take place Sunday, April 11, 3:00 p.m. at the Southland Community Church, 192 PTH 52 West, Steinbach. Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Sunday School Mission National Office, 189 Henderson Hwy, Winnipeg MB R2L 1L7. There is also a table set up for donations in the lobby of the church following the funeral service.
