Joyce Tachinski passed away peacefully on April 22, 2010 at River View Health Center in Winnipeg at the age of 78 years. Joyce is survived by her husband of 55 years Joe, their two children Jo-Ann Zelen (Mike) and Glen (Christine Kuluk), grandchildren Peter and Alexandra Zelen and Xander, Victoria, Kennedy and Jackson Tachinski. She is survived by her sisters Helen Ryan (Ted) and Evelyn Struthers (Doug) and her brother Ronald Reeves (Joyce) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She also is survived by Joe’s sisters and brother Ann Romanchuk (Lawrence), Vickie Bingham (Tom), Joyce Kowalchuk (Tom), and Mike Tachinski (Evelyne). Joyce was born on May 9, 1931 in Vita, Manitoba, the second of 4 children of Annie and Syd Reeves. She grew up in Piney and then attended Normal School in Winnipeg where she trained to be a teacher. While teaching in Pine Ridge Manitoba she met her husband Joe. They were married in 1954 and she continued teaching in St. Vital until she and Joe moved to Transcona and started a family. She continued her teaching career after her children were in school and taught at Regent Park School until she retired in 1988. Joyce was proud to have earned her degree at The University of Winnipeg by attending classes in the evening while busy teaching and caring for her family. Retirement was a wonderful life for Joyce, as she and Joe spent a few years in Mill Bay, BC, their summers at the lake at Buffalo Point, and on the Warroad golf course. Most of their winters were spent in Florida, Australia, New Zealand, Arizona, and California. She made two trips to Ireland and England and even thirty years later, was able to tell the adventures with vivid recollection. They also made many visits to see Jo-Ann and her family in Victoria. Her most favorite time however was spent with her grandchildren who were her biggest source of love and pride. Joyce will always be remembered for her love of story-telling and her ability to always make you feel at home. During retirement, Joyce and Joe also had the pleasure of making many long and enduring friendships with Golf friends, Bridge friends, lake friends, and travel friends, adding to their enduring friendship with Nick and Ceese Pyrch. Joyce actively pursued her Irish heritage. She made sure that there was never an Irish or family story untold and never a detail missed, there was never a relative or friend not welcomed, and there was never a student turned away. Joyce had built a legacy through her efforts that will last through the generations and be a lasting piece of many of our lives. Services will be held at 10 am on Monday April 26, 2010 at St Phillips Anglican Church, 240 Tache Ave. A short graveside service will follow at 3 pm at the Badger Cemetery in Badger, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Riverview Health Center or the Canadian Cancer Society in Joyce’s name. Joyce really appreciated the dedication of Dr Hilderman and the homecare and River View Health Canter and wants them recognized in her honor. “May the road rise to meet you.
