Obituary of Susie Toews

Psalm 121: 2, 8 [NIV] “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” “The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” With these words, the last devotional in the life of Susie Toews ended and moments later her soul was released from her body and went to meet her Lord and Saviour. Susie married John L. Toews on September 30, 1949, in the CMC church at Randolph, Manitoba. They farmed near New Bothwell. Five sons as well as several foster children blessed this marriage. Stan, Walter and Victor arrived in the first decade, with Bradley and Sheldon coming along to complete the family 12 years later. However, 37 years ago, on November 10, 1974, after only 25 years and a few weeks of marriage, John was suddenly and unexpectedly called home to the Lord. At 46 years of age, Susie was not only the parent of two pre-schoolers, but also a single mom. Little wonder she looked to Psalm 121 and asked, “Where does my help come from?” Susie had accepted Christ and was baptized on confession of her faith at the age of 19. Her faith and her Christ made it possible to deal with this situation. Handwritten notes she left clearly show that Psalm 121 and its message provided strength and comfort in her life. When the time was right, she moved from the farm to Niverville. After Bradley and Sheldon had established their own lives, she moved to Steinbach. Susie was also predeceased by an infant granddaughter Melissa, her parents David G. and Susanna Klippenstein, John’s parents Peter and Helena Toews, two brothers and a sister-in-law on the Klippenstein side of the family, as well as four brothers-in-law and two sisters on the Toews’ side. She leaves a family of 50 souls, including five sons, their spouses, 23 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. As Mary, Irene, Cynthia, Teresa, and Charlene entered the family, they became the daughters she never had and were a most precious element in her life. She is also survived by four brothers, their spouses, and many nephews and nieces with their families, as well four sisters, two with spouses, and many nephews and nieces with their families, in the Toews’ family. The family would like to thank the EMS personnel for their prompt response, and the health professionals at St. Boniface and Bethesda Hospitals for the care given to Susie during this last week, as well as their patience with and support for the family. Public viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach on Thursday, November 10, 2011, from 7:00 – 7:30 p.m. A short devotional will follow. Viewing will also be held at the church prior to the service. The funeral service will be held on Friday, November 11, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Chortitzer Mennonite Church, 479 Hanover Street, Steinbach, MB. Interment will take place at the Niverville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CSSM Gimli Bible Camp, Box 1579, Gimli, MB, R0C 1B0.
