Obituary of Arnold Douglas McLean

Arnold was born August 1, 1933 in Bjorkdale, Saskatchewan. He passed away peacefully on Monday, April 26, 2010 at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach. His stay in the hospital was made as comfortable as possible by all of the kind and caring nursing staff and doctors. We are grateful to each person that took the time to sit with Dad in the hospital and to spend time with him there. Arnold was predeceased by his wife, Linda, one brother and five sisters. He is survived by son, Gary (Marge) and their family; his son, Barry (Laurie) and their family; five sisters; numerous in-laws and nieces and nephews. Arnold was very excited at the upcoming arrival of his first great grandchild within the next few days. Starting off on his own in his teen years, Arnold entered the workforce building graineries in Saskatchewan. From there, he entered the Canadian Armed Forces, and it was during this time he met and married Linda Schalla. His next career move was ice road trucking, long before it was a TV show, and Dad always said the trucks they drove were “real trucks,” not like the ones they show on the TV now. After this, he started in the construction business, driving trucks and heavy equipment. The major part of this career was with Maple Leaf Construction, employed there for more than 28 years, and leaving his mark on many roads throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The ones we are all most familiar with here are Main Street and Mckenzie Avenue. Dad took much pride in the work he did and was a perfectionist when it came to roads. He came out of retirement a number of times, working for Unger Excavating, Diamond Construction and Gravel, RM of La Broquerie, Mateychuk Construction, and most recently with Hy-Way Construction, where he worked right up until the day before entering the hospital. Dad loved the outdoors, and various hobbies included hunting, and fishing, which, of course, were the basis of many fine stories he liked to tell. He and Mom made their home in the German settlement, Kerry, near St. Labre, Manitoba. He loved spending time with the grandchildren on his ATV’s and snowmobiles. He loved his dogs, and his love for animals may have started with a pet sheep named “Waxy” when he was a young boy at home. He kept his bird feeders well stocked so that he and mom could enjoy the many kinds of birds in the area. As Arnold’s family, we would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every person for your thoughts and prayers at this time. We appreciate your kindness. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 from 7 – 8:00 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, 465 Henry St., Steinbach. The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 29 at 1:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach with interment to follow at Kerrie Cemetery, St. Labre, MB. If friends so desire donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200 - 6 Donald Street; Wpg., MB R3L 0K6
