Obituary of Martha Wohlgemuth

Martha Barkman Wohlgemuth peacefully slipped away to her eternal reward on May 2, 2010 at Bethesda Hospital, Steinbach, MB. She was born to Martin F. and Agnes Barkman on January 20, 1923. She grew up and lived in the Steinbach area all her life. Mother committed her life to God and accepted the gift of salvation and at the age of 15 was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite on October 23, 1938. She embraced this faith unto the end. Mom told us many stories about her years of employment at Bowes Foods in Ontario, cook at a private boys’ school in Winnipeg as well as St. Boniface and Steinbach hospitals. She was married to our father, Lloyd Wohlgemuth on April 10,1953. Four children were born to them. After Dad’s call to the deaconry Mom faithfully filled her place as a deacon’s wife. Her gift of hospitality, giving a listening ear and caring nature were an inspiration to us all. After enjoying 37 years of married life, Dad was called home. She patiently endured her last years of failing health. Especially during the last months Mom expressed a desire to be relieved. She spoke of meeting Gerry, Norma and Dad on the other side. Left to cherish precious memories are her two daughters Leona of Steinbach, MB and Marj of Acton Vale, QC, one brother Dan and Gladys of Steinbach, two sisters Elda Barkman of Steinbach, Mary Ann Bartel of Roblin, MB, sister-in-law Elma Giesbrecht of Steinbach and the Wohlgemuth family Winston and Emily, Eddie and Alice, Stanley and Alice, Waldon and Mildred, Jim and Olive, Johnnie and Katherine, Norman and Darlene, Johnny and Libby and Frances, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband, Lloyd, daughter Norma, son Gerry, parents, brothers Harold, Bernard and Vincent. Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach on Tuesday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m. and at the church prior to the service. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite in Steinbach with interment at Heritage Cemetery.
