Obituary of Helen Plett

On Nov. 17, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. Helen Plett age 88 years left her earthly home, to spend Christmas and the rest of eternity with Jesus. She was predeceased by her husband David on May 1, 2005. She is survived by her two daughters Irma (Ray) Remple of Steinbach, Brenda (Curt) Loewen of Steinbach, six sons Larry (Mary) of Okotoks, AB, Wayne (Liz) of Kola, Wally (Ann) of Brandon, Reynold (Eleanor) of Red Deer, AB, Lyle (Beverley) of Three Hills, AB, Barry (Laurel) of Steinbach as well as 25 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, two sisters and two brothers. Mom accepted Christ and was baptized in her mid-teens. Mom met our Dad, her soul mate and life's partner, and shortly thereafter, in 1942 they were married and enjoyed 63 years of marriage. Their early years were spent farming which meant plenty of hard work. Mom spent many hours in her large garden, which, with her labour of love always produced enough to feed her family as well as the many people Dad would befriend and bring home for meals. Mom would also seem to find the time to plant beautiful flower gardens every spring. She also took up hobbies such as quilting and crocheting. She spent many hours making quilts, afghans and dish cloths for all her children and grandchildren. In 1969 Mom and Dad moved to Vanderhoof, B.C. feeling God's call to go and assist in church planting. There Mom found work as a chambermaid in a motel. They returned to Manitoba in 1974 making their home in Virden. Mom worked as a cook in a restaurant for a few years after which she spent more than 10 years working in laundry services in the Westman Nursing home before retirement. During this time she also worked side by side with Dad serving the Lord by ministering to the people at Sioux Valley Reserve. As children and grandchildren, we have many fond memories of assisting them there. The grandchildren especially enjoyed going with Grama and Grandpa to sing Sunday mornings as they were sure to be taken out for lunch after. One of Mom and Dad's greatest enjoyments during retirement was camping, which often took them to Alberta to visit the children and also allowed them to make many friends, which was never a chore for them. The past 16 years were spent in Steinbach near family and old friends. Many days were spent taking long drives on warm sunny days. Mom was a loving mother. She often expressed her love and concern for us, her children and grandchildren. We know she prayed for us. Due to the unfortunate diagnosis of Alzheimer Disease she spent her last 6 1/2 years as a resident at Rest Haven Nursing Home. We would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Krahn and the staff at Rest Haven for the excellent care Mom received. Should friends so desire donations may be made in Mom's memory to Haven Group Foundation for Rest Haven Nursing Home, 177 Woodhaven Ave, Steinbach, MB, R5G 1K7 The funeral service was held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel on Thursday, November 24 at 10:30 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel with interment at Heritage Cemetery. The Family Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach on Wednesday, November 23 at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held Thursday, November 24 at 1030 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel with interment at Heritage Cemetery.
