Sara Janzen passed away peacefully at the Resthaven Nursing Home on June 3, 2010 at the age of 95. She grew up in South Russia and Crimea. The saddest day of her life was on January 13, 1937 when her father was forcibly taken by the Stalin regime and he died two days later. In 1941 Sara and her remaining family were loaded onto cattle trains and sent to Siberia to do hard labour where most of her family eventually perished. In 1955 Sara was allowed to go free. She went to live with her nephew in Russia. In 1974 Sara was able to come to Canada at nearly 60 years of age. Here she received a friendly welcome from relatives. She worked at Granny’s Poultry for 5 years. She moved to Fernwood in 1982 and lived there for 26 years. Sara was a devout Christian and a faithful member of the Steinbach Mennonite Church. Sara was predeceased by her parents and 8 siblings. She is survived by one nephew and one niece and their families in Germany, and many friends and distant relatives in Canada. Many thanks to those who befriended her, gave her rides, and helped her. Thank you to the home care workers and staff at Fernwood and Cedarwood and to the staff at Resthaven for their loving care of “Tante Sara”. A special thanks to the friends and palliative care volunteers who held vigil at her bedside and to Drs. Kaethler and Krahn for their compassionate medical care. Viewing will be at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Drive, Monday, June 7 at 7:00 p.m. with a sharing time at 7:30p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Steinbach Mennonite Church, 345 Loewen Blvd, Steinbach, on Tuesday, June 8 at 2:00 p.m., with interment at Memorial Cemetery.
