Lena Bednar of Vita, Manitoba passed away February 12, 2001 at the age of 86 at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, MB. Lena will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children; Ann (Mike) Mushaluk of Piney, MB, Evelyn (Ross) Kulay of Edmonton, AB, Emily Salamandyk of Winnipeg, MB, Charles (Audrey) Bednar of Steinbach, MB, Walter (Yvonne) Bednar of Kamsack, SK; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren and four sisters. She was predeceased by her husband Mike Bednar in 1984 and her four brothers. In 1968 Lena and Mike Bednar moved into Vita. They gave up the daily chores of the farm for a little more relaxed routine. They would start each day with some quiet meditations and readings from the prayer book Molitvenik – and end their day with evening prayers. Summers were spent caring for a small garden that produced more than enough tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables that Lena (Baba) was always eager to share with loved ones. Her Borscht and tomato vegetable juices were always very tasty. Dill pickles were always plentiful too. A visit to Lena’s (Baba’s) house no matter how short or long always meant that you would be treated with something homemade – That didn’t only mean a great meal or dessert. Lena (Baba) also enjoyed sewing quilts. She lovingly hand stitched one or more for each member of her family as well as anyone who asked her. Fortunately, her living room was large enough to set up the quilt frame for queen size quilts. For added exercise Lena (Baba) would often take a walk around town with close friends or family. And on quiet evenings a card game was often played at the kitchen table. Thank you for all your love and prayers. May you rest in peace in God’s arms.
