Obituary of Benjamin Reimer

Peacefully, on Monday, June 28th, 2010 Bennie Reimer went to be with his Lord and Savior. Bennie was born on October 10th, 1919 in the District of Clearspring near Steinbach, Manitoba on the generational Reimer homestead. He was one of 12 children born to John B. and Maria Reimer. On July 1, 1942 he met Helen Giesbrecht and after a short courtship they were married on November 22nd, 1942. They started their married life by living in a Conscientious Objector (CO) Camp in Northern Ontario as dad was conscripted to this lumber camp during the Second World War. By 1944 they had moved to the Reimer homestead where they raised their family of five daughters. Dad farmed the homestead for 34 years as well he worked lands in the Broken Head and Beausejour areas. Over the years to improve his farming skills, dad attended several courses through the Department of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba. When the homestead was expropriated for the expansion of the #12 Hwy he scaled back on farming while living near the Village of Sarto until retirement brought him back to the City of Steinbach. He was a devoted husband who learnt to cope as a widower after mom passed away in December 2006, soon after their 64th Wedding Anniversary. He was a wonderful father to us all and dearly loved by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dad was raised a Kleine Gemeinde and followed and supported his father’s pioneering efforts for church reform. He has been a life long member of the Steinbach Evangelical Mennonite Church, which benefited from his volunteerism and tithing. He had a slogan that he left with us each day “be kind to others” and he taught us the importance of being grateful for what God had given us. Dad had a heart for those less fortunate then himself. It was his sense of social justice that moved him to sponsor water wells in Africa. He was well known across the region for his attendance at auction sales and his love of antiques. He was a volunteer at the Mennonite Village Museum where he helped to tend the animals and demonstrate rope making. He was an avid supporter and volunteer for the annual Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) auction. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and left shut-ins with encouragement along with their food. He leaves to mourn his passing his five daughters: Luella and Peter Klassen of Steinbach, Sheila and John Wiebe of Steinbach, Nadene and Eric Bragg of New Hamburg, ON, Jocelyn and Perry Kent of Surrey, BC, and Melanie and Don Morin of Ste. Anne; his seven grandchildren Prescott and Monica Klassen, Natasha and Marlon Wiebe, Charlton and Charlotte Wiebe, Jayda Wiebe, Crystal Morin, Megan Morin, and Rebecca Bragg as well as his great-grandsons: Benjamin Wiebe, Owen and Colton Wiebe, and Brentten Martens. The family is grateful for the care dad received from the Home Care workers at Woodhaven who made living independently possible. The family is also appreciative of the medical care provided over the years by Dr. Krahn. A special thanks is given to Nurses Roxanne Maynard and Lora Mae Suebzon from Steinbach Bethesda Hospital for their efforts at alleviating dad’s pain and suffering so that he could peacefully enter eternity. Though dad experienced many hardships over his 90 years his faith was unshakable and held him during good and bad times. He has been a wonderful mentor and taught each of us so much in his own unassuming way. He had the assurance that he was bound for Glory and will have been welcomed by the Lord God Almighty with the words “well done thou good and faithful servant”. We love you dad, Luella, Shelia, Nadene, Jocelyn, and Melanie. Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach on Tuesday, July 6 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. The funeral Service will be held Wednesday, July 7 at 2:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Mennonite Church, 422 Main St, Steinbach with interment at Heritage Cemetery. Donations in Benjamin (Bennie) Reimer’s memory may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) water well program, 134 Plaza Drive; Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9
