Obituary of George (Gerhard) Enns

GEORGE H. ENNS It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Gerhard (George) Hoeppner Enns, on July 21, 2010 at the Poseidon Care Centre in Winnipeg. He will be deeply missed by his children Kenneth (Lesley), Stanley (Maureen Benoit) and Eleanor MacDougall (Grant), as well as his grandchildren David, Gregory , Melanie (Keith McKague), Amelia, William and Charlotte. He is also survived by his large extended Enns and Loewen families. George was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn Ratzlaff Enns, neé Loewen, and by his infant daughter, Evelyn Georgina. He was also predeceased by his parents, Agathe Hoeppner Enns and Gerhard Gerhard Enns; his sister, Judith; his brothers, Dietrich and Peter; and his brother-in-law, Henry Bergman. George was born on November 25, 1920 in the Village of Leonidovka in Soviet Ukraine, and moved to Manitoba in the summer of 1924. He grew up on the family farm in the Steinbach area and moved to Winnipeg where he completed degrees in Theology, Arts and Education. Dad became a certified teacher and spent most of his professional life teaching in the Winnipeg School Division. He served as President of both the Winnipeg Teachers Association and the Manitoba Teachers Society. Before retirement he served as Chair of the Manitoba Social Services Appeal Board. Dad was known for his wide interests, including history, politics, science, gardening, nature and religion, and his passionate caring for people and social justice. A serious and caring man, he was always willing to share his knowledge and to provide support to his family and friends. He served as a North Kildonan Municipal Counsellor and was active in the New Democratic Party since its formation. George and Evelyn were married in 1947 and raised their family together facing the challenges life gave them. All family events were especially important to Dad. He loved to garden all his life, and managed to keep gardening until he was eighty-seven. He was famous for the tomatoes, cucumbers, apples and many other fruits and vegetables he would grow and give away to family members, neighbours and members of the community. We all loved and respected Dad for the knowledgeable and caring person he was. He lived his Mennonite faith through the way he tried to help others, in later years attending the Springfield Heights Mennonite Church and the services at Poseidon Care Centre. Dad’s health declined after the death of our mother in 2008, and he spent the last year and a half at the Poseidon Care Centre, where he was cared for with dignity and compassion. We would like to thank the Fourth Floor staff there for their wonderful care. We are also grateful to Dad’s wonderful family and friends for their love and support over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity or the Canadian Down Syndrome Society. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral, 150 Penfeld Dr., Steinbach, MB. A gathering of family and friends will take place at the Kildonan Community Church, 2373 Main Street, Winnipeg, Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at 7:30 p.m.
