Obituary of Maria Ginter

Maria Ginter Our mother was born to Martin A. and Aganetha Hiebert on November 6th, 1924 in the RM of Hanover, in Manitoba, Canada. Mom’s parents moved their family to Chaco, Paraguay when she was about two years old, where she spent her formative years. As a young adult, she was baptized upon the confession of her faith in May of 1944 by Bishop Martin C. Friesen. On August 29, 1946, she married our Dad, Jacob U. Ginter. This union was blessed with five sons and seven daughters. In their early life together, they moved to various communities in the search of the best way to provide for their family. These moves brought with them many struggles and hardships, such as the loss of their oldest daughter in infancy, the need to care for a physically challenged daughter, who died at the age of 16, poverty, and Dad being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, just to name a few. On July 26, 1969, Mom and Dad finally managed to come back to their homeland of Canada with ten of their twelve children. They settled down in Steinbach, MB, where Mom proceeded to learn a whole new way of life. Having been accustomed to working very hard in the harsh climate of Paraguay, she, never the less, had a lot of adjustments to make. The extreme differences in weather, culture and lifestyle from Paraguay to Canada were at times difficult. Mom’s strong faith, will, and determination were fundamental in her finding ways to overcome these differences. She always found new and creative ways to take care of her family and do things she loved so much. Her love for cooking, making a large garden, fall canning, and sewing gave her much joy and fulfillment as long as her health allowed. The way Mom shared these things with others, especially her children and grandchildren, showed us the kindness and generosity of her heart. On Sunday, October 22, 2006, the Lord saw fit to answer Mom’s prayers and longings to go home. We as a family were blessed to see her so at peace and were able to support her in song and prayers as she fell asleep to awaken in God’s glory. She leaves to cherish her memories: two sons; Ben (Marian) of Mitchell, and John of Winnipeg; five daughters: Neta (Abe) Reimer of Steinbach, Susie Ginter of Gretna, Eva Werner-Stern, Esther Penner of Winnipeg, Frieda (Jake) Unrau of Steinbach, one daughter-in-law Marie Ginter of Grunthal, twenty one grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Peter (Maria) Hiebert of Winnipeg; three sisters: Aganetha (Henry) Wiebe of Steinbach, Eva Wiebe of Steinbach, Elizabeth (Peter) Wiebe of Bolivia, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Jacob U. Ginter, three sons: Dave, Wilhelm (Bill) and Martin; two daughters: Anna and Maria; one grandson, Garry, and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents: Martin A. and Aganetha Hiebert, one brother and five sisters. During the last few years, Mom’s healthcare needs greatly increased and she required much medical care. We wish to sincerely thank the Homecare staff; doctors and staff at Steinbach Bethesda and St Pierre Hospitals, Rest Haven Personal Care Home, and Bethesda Place for the loving and kindhearted care they provided. We remember Dr. Wilfred Kaithler with special gratitude for his compassionate care for our Mother. His attention to her medical, emotional and spiritual needs have strengthened and encouraged her many times. We also wish to thank Todd Harder and his staff at Birchwood Funeral Chapel for the personal and professional care. A public viewing will be held Thursday, October 26 at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, at 7:00 PM with a devotional at 7:30 PM. The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 27, at 2:00 PM at the Chortitzer Mennonite Church, 479 Hanover Street, Steinbach, with interment at the Rosengard Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Bethesda Place, Box 939, Steinbach, MB, R5G 1A3.
