Obituary of Linda Klaassen

Linda Klaassen (nee Buhr) was born November 15, 1910 at Edenburg, east of Gretna, to Jacob and Susanna (nee Friesen) Buhr. She passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 11, 2001 at 8:40 a.m. at the Steinbach Bethesda Hospital. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John W. Klaassen, in August 1988, and their son, Robert Theodore, in 1944. Along with her parents, she was also predeceased by 5 sisters and their spouses, namely Helen Toews, Mary Reimer, Susie Vogt, Elma Driedger and Wanda Loeppky; also 6 brothers and their wives, namely Peter, Bill, John, Herman, Jacob and Edward Buhr. Our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother’s life and death at 90 years ended an era of that generation in the large Buhr family. She is survived by her two daughters, Marianne (Bill Hildebrandt) and Dorothy (Peter Hiebert), and their families. There are 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. During her childhood, our mother attended Edenburg Elementary School and continued her high school at the MCI in Gretna to complete her Grade 11. She worked hard on the family farm in her youth, ploughing with a team of horses and stoking grain during harvest in the hot summer sun, at a time when most farm work was done manually. She was a good student and would have loved to have been a teacher, but had to go find work to help support her family, as these were the depression years of the 1930’s. She was baptized upon confession of faith in the Edenburg church on June 9, 1930 by Rev. David Schultz. On her 26th birthday, November 15, 1936, she married John W. Klaassen from the Gretna area, and settled on the Klaassen family homestead, 2 miles north of Gretna. This is where their son Bobby was born, on December 11, 1939. Tragedy struck just before his 5th birthday, when Bobby died after a scalding accident. This was indeed a dark time in the Klaassen home. But with an enduring faith, they looked to the future, as they built their own home on a small farm a mile east of Gretna. The Lord blessed them when daughter Marianne was born in 1947, and three years later Dorothy joined the family. They raised their family on the farm, farmed until 1974, spent 7 years in Gretna, and moved to Steinbach in 1981 for the remainder of their retirement. Mother loved a good competitive game of Chinese checkers, and board games like crocinole and Scrabble. She very much enjoyed history, and history-in-the-making, as current events were important…the last USA election sparked a great deal of interest for her. She was praying that President George W. Bush would make it into the presidency as she weighed all stated policies with a discerning and agile mind. If she prayed for strong, moral leadership in high places, she prayed even more so for her children and their children. She read her Bible regularly and walked circumspectly. In fact, we learned that she read here Bible through almost four times in two and a half years. Our parents left us a wonderful legacy of enduring faith, and we can best honour their memory by similarly walking in faith. The funeral service for Linda Klaassen was held Tuesday, August 14, 2001 at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB. Interment at Gretna Cemetery.
