Obituary of Jacob P. Dueck
The family would like to announce the “home going” of our father Jacob P. Dueck. He was born to Peter and Sara Dueck on March 19, 1907 and died peacefully on August 13, 2001, after a lengthy illness, at his residence, Woodhaven Manor. In 1935, when Dad was 27, he was baptized upon the confession of his faith in Jesus Christ and became a member of the Evangelical Mennonite Church in Steinbach. That same year on December 1, he married Elisabeth Esau Toews who was born on August 2, 1911 and died on July 5, 1999. They had 64 eventful and wonderful years together.
He started farming by renting the family farm from his widowed mother. He purchased the farm in 1943, after which his mother with her married daughters moved to Mexico. This was the family home for the next thirty years. It was here our parents raised their family of nine children. There was always lots of life and sometimes-great excitement, whether doing daily chores, entertaining friends or preparing for the weekend activities. We, the children have fond memories of our childhood days on the family farm.
Father was elected to the ministry in the Steinbach E.M.C. Church in 1944. He was the leading pastor from 1961 to 1965. From1965 to 1985 he worked part time as chaplain at Rest Haven Nursing Home and the adjacent senior housing complex. During this time he and our mother established a program of activities for seniors. Both are remembered with love and respect for their committed and faithful service to the many seniors they encountered.
Throughout his ministry Dad enjoyed the travels connected with it, often accompanied by our mother, visiting church families, churches and mission stations in Mexico, Belize, South America, and across Canada and the U.S.A. His guide for service was based on Psalm 51:9. “I will praise Thee, O Lord, among the people.”
Dad was predeceased by his wife Elisabeth, his parents, his brother and sisters, except for his sister Tina Friesen of Nova Scotia. He will be missed and remembered with love and respect by his children: Gordon (Nettie) Dueck, Henry (Shirley) Dueck, Margaret (Allan) Chambers, Betty (Gerald) Patterson, Peter (Dina) Dueck, Robert Dueck, Grace (Garry) Klassen, George (Ann) Dueck, Vern (Barb) Dueck, thirteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren, relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held Saturday, August 18, 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Mennonite Church, Steinbach, MB. Interment in the Heritage Cemetery.
Should friends so desire, donations in his memory may be made to: Steinbach E.M.C. Missions Fund or the Gideon Bible Society.
We, the family would like to thank the homecare staff and nurses who lovingly cared for Dad during his lengthy illness.
