Peacefully on December 5, 2001 at the Vita & District Health Centre, Steve Chubey, age 84 years, of Vita, entered into eternal rest. Steve was predeceased by Marie, his loving wife of 42 years in February 1984. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Violet, one son Don (Pat) Chubey of Neepawa and grandchildren Shelley and Michael of Neepawa, Leanne of Gladstone and Steven of Nanaimo, BC and one daughter Diane (Lorne) Morrisseau of Selkirk and grandchildren Jonathan of Dauphin, Melanie (Shane) Johnston of Richer, Charlene (Gordie) Farrell of Winnipeg and his three very precious great grandchildren Daneal Farrell, Joshua and Ethan Johnston. He will also be missed by Violet’s family who adopted him as their stepfather and dido. Steve was predeceased by his parents Harry and Paraska Chubey, his brothers Mike and Henry and his sisters Mary Zawada and Annie Kowaliuk. He is survived by his brother Bill of Arbakka, his sisters Katie Gushuliak of Vita, Nettie Boychuk of Sundown and Helen Hirshfield of Sprague and the many nephews and nieces who loved and respected thier “uncle” Steve. After their marriage in 1941, Steve and Marie farmed on the Nykoliuk homestead southeast of the Arbakka post office. Steve remained on the farm for several years after Marie’s passing and moved to Vita in 1993, when he and Violet were married. Our father will be remembered for his many talents. Perhaps the most precious to him was his cantering services that he learned from his father and took over after his passing and which he continued until failing health. He was a musician, playing an accordion for dances and he loved to sing, especially the old Ukrainian songs. He was a good carpenter, a fair blacksmith and a frustrated mechanic while he raised his family on the farm. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed playing competition horse shoes and all kinds of card tournaments, but his favorite times were the many evenings he and Violet spent playing cards with Nick and Nettie and John and Helen and Don and Pat when they came for visits. His recent most pleasant highlights were Charlene and Melanie’s weddings and the graduation ceremonies of his grandsons Steven and Jonathan at the RCMP Academy in Regina. The funeral service will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 followed by interment at the family graveside in the St. Nicholas Parish Cemetery in Arbakka. Prayers will be said Monday, December 10, 7:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel. Active pallbearers will be Constable Jonathan Morrisseau, Constable Steven Chubey, Bud Fey, Douglas Zawada, Terry Dawydiuk and Russell Dawydiuk. Honoary pallbearers will be John Hirshfield, Nick Boychuk, Bill Chubey and Tony Lazaruk. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Vita Palliative Care Unit or the Canadian Cancer Society.
