Obituary of Norman K. Penner

Norman (Bob) Penner was born in Steinbach on Jan 11, 1926 and passed away at Concordia Hospital on Sept 17, 2010. He was the third born, of eight children, of Katherine and Cornelius Penner. At fifteen, Dad‘s mom passed away suddenly, shortly thereafter his father remarried and Dad acquired 5 more siblings. Dad joined the army at seventeen following in his older brother Henry’s footsteps. He never went overseas, but worked in driver training during the war. This turned out to be important experience as driving became his career. First, doing road construction in different parts of Canada, then long distance driving, and finally joining Winnipeg Transit in 1956. He loved bus driving and retired after 32 years. He and mom had four children, Lorna (1953), Raymond (1956), Curt (1958), Donald (1964). Raymond was killed in a tragic car accident in 1961. Mom and Dad lived in the same house in Windsor Park from 1961 until July 2010 when they moved into Concordia Village. Dad loved and cherished deeply his children and their spouses and his grand- and great grandchildren. He and mom were married for 57 years. Dad had a bad fall in mid August and suffered declining health over the next 4 weeks. He is survived by his wife Tina (nee Funk), his children (Lorna and John Dick of Toronto, Curt and Shelley Penner of Oakbank, Donald and Debbie Penner of London Ontario), 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, four sisters and three brothers. Donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee, 134 Plaza Drive; Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9. Viewing will be at Callsbeck Fellowship Chapel, 1445 Callsbeck Ave, Winnipeg, on Monday, September 20, 2010, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at the chapel prior to the service. The funeral will be held Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Dr., Steinbach, MB with interment at Mennonite Memorial Gardens.
