Obituary of Helen Eidse

Helen Reimer Eidse, 82, passed away at her home surrounded by family on October 17, 2010. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Ben Eidse and four daughters, Hope, Faith, Charity and Grace, and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, Peter D. and Maria Friesen Reimer and two sisters, Amanda and Betty. She leaves seven sisters, two brothers, eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Helen was a Registered Nurse, a 1952 graduate of Grace Hospital, Winnipeg. She gave her heart and service to the people of Congo, Africa. For years she ran a dispensary, tuberculosis ward and leprosarium and administered the groundbreaking cures for leprosy in the 1970s. She delivered 100 babies a year and later directed 24 clinics, soliciting medicine donations from large pharmaceutical companies. She was fabled for raising many people from death after her daughter Faith, given up for dead from cerebral malaria, was revived by quinine, anti-convulsents and prayer. Sick people often walked (or were carried) 15 miles past a doctor-staffed hospital to be served by the nurse who laid on hands and prayed with them. Helen also helped her husband’s translation team complete the modern Chokwe Bible and was fluent in several languages, often writing encouraging letters in French to a young Congolese girl. While proof-reading the Bible in Congo in 1987, she delivered a granddaughter, Grace’s daughter Kajia. When the Eidse’s retired to Steinbach, they bought a house on First Street across from Helen’s mother, Mrs. P.D. Reimer. Daily they looked after each other, and Helen also filled her home with the homeless, elderly and foster children. Ben and Helen's home became Steinbach’s unofficial homeless shelter. She later became president of Serving Seniors and launched Steinbach’s Meal-on-Wheels program, a prophetic act that would one day serve her. When Ben took a sabbatical as president of Steinbach Bible College, Helen returned to nursing to support his Ph.D. research at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. There she learned the Edinburgh bus system and delivered home health care to the elderly. The Eidses returned to Steinbach several months before Helen’s mother died. Five months later, in March 1995, Helen suffered a major stroke. Helen lived in her bed and wheelchair for almost 16 years, prolonging her listening, singing, laughing, and praying with and for her beloved family and friends. Viewings and devotionals will be held at Woodhaven Manor, Steinbach, on Wednesday, October 20, at 10 a.m. and at Rosenort Evangelical Mennonite Church on Wednesday at 7 p.m. A funeral service is planned at Steinbach Evangelical Mennonite Church, 422 Main Street, on Thursday, October 21, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Capacity Building Communities in Congo, care of Ben Eidse, 108-175 Woodhaven Avenue, Steinbach, MB R5G 1K6.
