Obituary of Jacob A. Dyck

Peacefully on Tuesday, October 20, 2010 with family at his side, Jacob A. Dyck of Steinbach, Man. passed away at the age of 91 after an illness of several months. Our father is survived by his four children: Peter, Helene, Jake (Diane) and Anne Janz, five grandchildren: Leilani Kagan, Lisa (Dan) Stiver, Kassandra Dyck, Leighton and Natasha Janz, one great-grandson, Joshua Kagan, and a sister-in-law, Tina Loewen, all of Steinbach and Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his wife Helene in 2003, his daughter-in-law Aida Junio Dyck in 2008 and grandson Tyler Dyck in 2009, and by his nine siblings. He was born on Aug. 3, 1919 in the village of Rosenthal, Ukraine, the second youngest of 10 children. Dad and Mom survived the horrors of post-revolutionary Russia, leaving their homeland toward the end of World War Two, and living for a time in a refugee camp in Germany after passing through Poland. Their eldest child, Peter, was born in Germany. In 1948 the family left for Canada, settling in Pincher Creek, Alta. for the first year where Dad worked for a farmer who had paid for the young family’s passage from Germany. They then moved to southeastern Manitoba where the first year was spent in the Twin Creek area northwest of Steinbach before they bought a small house on Henry Street where Dad still lived until he was hospitalized this summer. Their three younger children were born in Steinbach. Dad spent his first summers working at a canning factory in southern Ontario and winters in the bush camps of northwestern Ontario near Kenora. Around 1953 he began work as a carpenter’s helper and moved on to building construction. Over the years he worked with a number of local builders, including Frank Barkman, Albert F. Reimer, Jac Giesbrecht and Henry Harder. One of his favorite projects was the museum windmill he helped build in the early 1970s with the late Henry Borkowsky. Dad built a cottage for himself and Mom at Buffalo Point in retirement and built a second one for daughter Helene the next year. For him, it seemed the construction of a building held more interest than actually using it. Dad always had an intense interest in sports, a hobby he pursued for many years and which saw him at the arena and curling rink during the months when building construction shut down for the season. In fact, arena staff made him an usher after seeing how much time he spent watching games. When his grandchildren were old enough to become involved in sports, he faithfully followed their game schedules in the community and beyond. He also indulged his love of playing volleyball with a church group and often went to the local high school to watch tournaments. Dad’s other consuming interest was gardening. His expansive property sported flowers and fruits of every description and his street-front flower garden was much admired by passers-by. He took a special interest in nurturing tomatoes and apple trees with each year’s bounty becoming a source of pride. He continued to tend his garden until this summer when health problems developed. The funeral service will be held Friday, October 22 at 2 p.m. from Steinbach Mennonite Church where Dad was a member since 1952. Interment will follow at Heritage Cemetery. Viewing will begin one hour before the service. Pallbearers will be Lisa and Dan Stiver, Leilani Kagan, Joshua Kagan, Tom Blumberg, Kassandra Dyck, and Leighton and Natasha Janz. Donations in Dad’s memory to Mennonite Central Committee, 134 Plaza Drive; Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9 or the Canadian FoodGrains Bank, 400 – 280 Smith Street; Winnipeg, MB R3C 1K2 will be gratefully accepted. The family thanks the staff at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach and Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg for the care Dad received during his illness and the efforts made toward his comfort in his last days. “Bis hierher has uns der Herr geholfen”
