On Thursday October 28th, 2010, with his family by his side, Archie Plett peacefully passed away at the age of 85 after a brief battle with cancer. Left to cherish Dad’s memory are his loving wife of 64 years, Ruby (nee Penner). Five children, Diana (Wally) Fiege of Didsbury AB, Don (Betty) of Landmark, Phillis (Ken) Penner of Steinbach, Larry (Annette) of Kelowna B.C. and Jarrod (Ginette) of Lorette; thirteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, one brother, four sisters, one brother-in-law, one sister-in-law and many relatives and friends. He was predeceased by one son Garry Paul in 1980 and one grand-daughter Paula Ruby Penner in 1978. Dad was a selfless, hard working man who always led by example. This was evidenced even as he battled his cancer with courage and grace, trusting in his Eternal Father to carry him through to the end. When told of his terminal cancer Dad accepted this with grace and dignity. Dad was baptized upon his Faith at the age of nineteen and joined the Prairie Rose EMC along with his future bride, whom he married August 31, 1946 at the age of 21. Here, Dad worked quietly and followed the teachings of Matthew 6: 2 and 3 giving quietly and helping others knowing that his Lord and Saviour saw his selfless actions. He helped family and strangers alike in moving into and living in our community. When a recreational site was needed in Landmark, Dad donated a prime piece of land that is now the site of the Landmark Park. Dad followed in his father’s footsteps as an usher in church for many years before turning over this position to his sons. Now his grandson is a fourth generation usher in the same church. Mom and Dad farmed for the first four years of their marriage before taking over the Landmark General Store. In 1957 they relocated the plumbing business in Landmark to its present site where he did business until his retirement at the age of 60, turning the business over to his son. Dad had a motto in business which was that employees did not work for us, but rather they worked with us. A friend with whom Dad did business with for thirty years expressed his admiration of Dad’s honesty saying that “his word was his bond.” Dad had an accident breaking his ankle at the young age of 14. This never healed properly and he suffered with this even until his death. In his retirement years, Dad worked as a volunteer at the Steinbach Thrift Store. Although he had only a grade 6 education his knowledge of math was a tremendous asset working the cash register. He was appreciated by his coworkers and management alike. He worked at this until just six months ago. Although we the family will miss Dad, we are happy that he has been able to go home to join those who have gone before him to his Heavenly home. We are also thankful that he did not need to suffer and that his sickness was short lived. We would like to thank all the nurses and staff at Bethesda Hospital for their love and compassion as they cared for Dad. We especially thank Dr. Curtis Krahn, Dad’s cancer specialist and his family doctor, Dr. Wilfried Kaethler who was not only a physical help, but a spiritual help and inspiration as well. May God richly reward you for all you have done and continue to do. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 2 at 11:00 a.m. at Prairie Rose EMC in Landmark with burial at the church cemetery. Viewing at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach on Monday, November 1 at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional at 7:30 p.m., and at the church prior to the service.
