Obituary of Katharina Wiebe

After a prolonged struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease, our mother, grandma, and great-grandma Katherine H. Wiebe, lately of Steinbach went to be with her Lord on Saturday December 4, 2010, at age 85. Mom was born in Rosenort, near Gretna, on September 4, 1925, eleventh of 15 children born to Peter C. and Agatha Friesen. In 1943, upon the confession of her faith, she was baptized in the Chortitzer Mennonite church in Niverville. She and Diedrich Wiebe, of the Silberfeld church were married on October 14, 1943. They farmed for many years in Blumengard which lay about half way between present day Niverville and Blumenort. As they gradually retired from mixed farming, Mom had to leave behind her lush plots of vegetables and the profusion of flowerbeds, which thrived through her magic touch well before Miracle-Gro was invented. She settled into turning their new house-lots into gardens of Eden from Blumengard to Steinbach. Extra time was now spent working with the Women’s Friendship Circle. She served as treasurer of it for over 30 years. She also was part of Women for MCC which met monthly in Winnipeg and supported a variety of projects. She also took regular shifts at the MCC Thrift Store in Niverville. These were also the years when grandchildren started to crop up and she loved hosting them and regaling them with tea parties and inspiring desserts and stories from her childhood, those often involving Uncle Peter as the arch villain. Her childhood was described as a happy one; she loved school and the friends around her at the Aran School in the former village of Osterwich, just west of New Bothwell. Here she played with her siblings and friends, enjoyed the writing and drawing that school afforded her, and likely set the path to her later writings and other creative works which remain with us as a legacy through daily diaries over a 50 year span with needlework and other stitchery that are now heirloom pieces. Amidst acquiring these skills and rambunctious play with her siblings there came also the sadness of her mothers’ sudden death during a routine dentist visit, which shook the whole family when Kay was 14. Suddenly the family had to fill the gap left by their mom, and Kay rallied along with her brothers and sisters, establishing life skills and strength in the Lord which she exhibited throughout her life. The family had also known earlier tragedy when a number of the earlier born children were taken by childhood diseases. Mom leaves behind her four married children: son Edwin (Elnora) Wiebe of Winnipeg, son Larry (Lorraine) Wiebe of New Bothwell, daughter Debbie (Curtis) Krahn of Steinbach, and son Rick (Heather) Wiebe of La Salle; grandchildren Christabel Wiebe (married to Simon Hughes), Roger, Tania, Matthew, Melissa (married to Mark Hiebert), Ryan, Joel, Adam, Ethan, and great-grandson Dylan and great-granddaughter Parker Katherine. She is survived by four siblings, Peter, Agatha, Abe, and David who all live in the area. She will be greatly missed but always remembered. We love you Mom – today and always. The family would like to thank the staff-team at Rest Haven Nursing Home here in Steinbach for their compassionate and sensitive care that brought much comfort to her final days. Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, December 7th at 7:00 p.m., devotional at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be held prior to the Memorial Service at Silberfeld Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 8th. Memorial Service will be held the same day at 2:00 p.m. at the Steinbach Chortitzer Mennonite Church, 479 Hanover St. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee, Mennonite Central Committee, 134 Plaza Drive; Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9
