Obituary of Naomi Lepp

After a short illness, Naomi (nee Reimer) Lepp of Steinbach passed away peacefully in the Steinbach Bethesda Hospital on December 10, 2010 at the age of 90 years. She was predeceased by her parents, John H.W. and Anna (nee Toews) Reimer, her youngest sister, Linea Reimer Geiser, and her husband, Hans Lepp. She is survived by her daughter Annalee Lepp of Victoria, BC; her son, John (Maryann) Lepp; three grandchildren Hagen (Heidi) Lepp, Nina (Jessie) Anderson, and Jared (Lindsay) Lepp; and three great grandchildren Nadia, Jayden, and Sawyer. She is also survived by four sisters – Wendy (Vern) Rempel of Eugene, Oregon, Elizabeth (Dennis) Bartel of Victoria, BC, Martini (Art) Janz of Goshen, Indiana, and Hildie (Mick) Terry of Little Rock, Arkansas. Born in the H.W. Reimer house at the corner of Main Street and Reimer Avenue in Steinbach in 1920, Naomi spent her growing-up years in Steinbach, Sperling, and Winnipeg with her beloved parents and five younger sisters. In the late 1940s, she decided to do MCC work in Akron, Pennsylvania and then joined the MCC post-World War II disaster relief effort in France and Germany. While working as a distribution clerk in the Hamburg MCC Unit, she met Hans Lepp, who was also working for MCC as a chauffeur, transporting Mennonite refugees and supplies to different parts of Germany. In 1953, she joined Hans in Uruguay where many Mennonite refugees emigrated after the War, the two were married, and their son John was born. In 1955, the family immigrated to Canada, settled in Winnipeg, and Annalee was born. Upon the death of her father and with Hans’ health failing, Naomi took over her parents’ Steinbach business, Reimer’s Dress Shoppe, in 1968 and ran the store until 1982. Besides being a resourceful and very hardworking businesswoman, she flourished during these years, especially since the store gave her the opportunity to meet and cater to a wide diversity of people from various communities in Southeastern Manitoba. Her retirement years were spent taking care of her husband who passed away in 2000, orchestrating Hans’ reunification with his daughter Tamara of the Ukraine after a 55-year separation, volunteering at the MCC Thrift Shop, attending Grace Mennonite Church and getting involved in Women in Mission activities, traveling, gardening, keeping up with world events, maintaining the family historical archives, as well as hosting and visiting her children, sisters, brothers-in law, relatives, and friends. She also had an incredible passion for walking. We, as a family, want to thank the Grace Mennonite Church for embracing Naomi as a member and friend over the last 40 years, her homecare workers at Woodhaven Manor for their excellent care in the last four years, Mel Letkeman, the pastor at Grace Mennonite, friends and family who visited her in the hospital, and the first floor nursing and palliative staff at Bethesda Hospital for ensuring that her final three weeks were as comfortable as possible. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 16 at 1:00 p.m. at the Grace Mennonite Church, 430-3rd Street in Steinbach with Pastor Mel Letkeman officiating. Interment will follow at the Heritage Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Mennonite Benevolent Society, (Ukraine Ministry), 1045 Concordia Ave, Winnipeg, MB R2K 3S7.
