Obituary of John Homer Calder

John Calder passed away peacefully in his sleep at Vita Personal Care Home, Friday, January 6, 2012. John is survived by his loving family; children Hazel (Bill) Bochinski, Cameron (Betty) , Glen (MaryAnne), Elaine Smith, seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. John was predeceased by his wife Effie, his parents, George and Hazel, brother Ralph, sister-in-laws Annie Steinke and Irene Calder, brother-in-laws Earl & Clarence Craig, Reinhold Steinke, son-in-law Bruce Smith and grandson Cory Smith. John was born June 29, 1921, and raised in Winnipeg by his Aunt Annie after his mother passed away in his first year. John attended Champlain, Machray and St. John’s High Schools. He graduated from the U of M Diploma in Agriculture in 1941. He married Effie Craig in 1942 and they farmed at Carlowrie until retiring to Franklin Manor, Dominion City, then Elmdale Court and Woodhaven Manor, Steinbach, Greendale Estates, Grunthal and lastly Vita Personal Care Home. We wish to thank all the Home Care staff, nurses and medical staff who supported John in his journey of life. A special thanks to the staff at Vita PCH for the care given to John over these last few weeks. John was a farmer all his life. He also drove school bus for 20 years for Boundary School Division. He loved both jobs and made many long lasting connections with people. John also was very involved in the communities he lived in. He was Secretary of the Carlowrie School for many years. He held many positions within the Newbridge and GreenRidge United Churches. In recent years Steinbach United was his home church. He was actively involved in 4-H when we children were growing up. John & Effie represented the Dominion City Golden Centre at Eastman MSOS. John spent many happy hours at Steinbach 55+. He loved to play cards, especially crib which he played till the end. Cam played a game of crib with Dad last Monday. Family and friends were very important to him. John and Effie loved travellng especially those camping, fishing or shopping trips with family or friends. Memorial service will be held, Wednesday, January 11th; 2:00 p.m. at Green Ridge United Church. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Green Ridge United Church Memorial Fund, c/o Glen Calder, Box 7, Carlowrie, MB., R0A 0G0; or the charity of your choice. Mom & Dad are reunited again. A loving Dad, Grandpa, and Great-Grandpa whom we will miss. Thank you for the memories. We’ll love you forever.
