Obituary of David F Dueck

Peacefully, surrounded by his family, David Dueck, age 88, entered his eternal home to be with Jesus on Wednesday January 5, 2011 Dad was born September 27, 1922 near Kleefeld. He is survived by his 10 children: John Dueck, Ruth Dueck, Allan and (Eva) Dueck, Marlene and (Bert) DueckSpeers, Carl and (Luella) Dueck, Peter and (Rose) Dueck, Janice and (Mel) Holland, Alvina Dueck, Tom and (Lucy) Dueck, and Larry and (Esther) Dueck together with 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Dad is survived by two sisters, Alvina in Belize and Martha (Ron Friesen) in Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his wife, Katherine in 2008, his parents, John I. and Elizabeth Dueck, six sisters and two brothers. Dad accepted Christ as his personal Saviour at a young age, and was baptized upon his confession of faith in the Kleefeld EMC Church. He married the love of his life, Katherine Kroeker on April 7th, 1949. Dad supported his family by working at Canadian Pacific Railway for approximately 30 years. In addition he farmed a quarter section of land near Kleefeld. Dad and Mom worked extremely hard and instilled a strong work ethic in their children. After a very serious car accident which left Dad physically injured, Dad was forced to retire and he never fully regained his mobility and strength. Dad applied his faith by serving in several organizations both within the church and in the greater community. He served with Christian Service Brigade and the Manitoba League for the physically handy-capped. A highlight for Dad was to organize and deliver hospital equipment to Honduras. Dad had an inventive mind and enjoyed creating and producing several gadgets including a very popular self-propelled merry-go-round. At Canadian Pacific Railway, he received two awards for inventions related to his work. After his retirement he designed and built a cart for Mom to ride on behind his 4 wheel scooter. After he recovered somewhat from his car accident Dad and Mom loved to travel. Dbad & Mom made several long trips and enjoyed the times they could visit their children around the world. The last 10 years became increasingly difficult for Dad to get around and that is when Dad and Mom moved into Woodhaven Manor. They enjoyed their time there, however after several years Dad was forced to move into the Rest Haven for more personalized nursing care. There he enjoyed many trips with the residents and staff including sports events, and the annual Steinbach parade. He looked forward to going for rides with his children enjoying the outdoors. Dad had a great determination to accomplish what he had set out to do. During the past 3 years his health deteriorated. He was unable to communicate the way he would have liked. This did not take away his desire to travel. Up to recently, three weeks ago, Dad still mentioned that he wanted to go on one more trip. Our Dad was extremely grateful for the excellent care provided by the Rest Haven staff. We, the family, would like to thank all the Rest Haven staff, and Dr. Krahn for the excellent care and compassion given our Dad. The funeral service will be held Friday, January 7, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Mennonite Church, 422 Main St, Steinbach with viewing prior to the service. Interment at the Kleefeld EMC Cemetery. If friends so desire donations may be made to Haven Group Foundation (for Rest Haven Nursing Home), 177 Woodhaven Ave, Steinbach, MB, R5G 1K7 The Family
