Obituary of Lucien Ovide Joseph Cote

Peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, April 29, 2012, Lucien Coté passed away at Action Marguerite (Foyer Valade) in Winnipeg at the age of 86. Lucien was born in La Broquerie, Manitoba, on July 6, 1925. On March 17, 1951, Lucien married Lorraine Olason from Piney, Manitoba. Lucien leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 61 years, Lorraine, and their seven children, Myron (Judy), Rodney (Marilyn), Sherry (Christopher), Barry (Margaret), Blaine (Cheryl), Geraldine, Nicole; grandchildren - Christopher, Kevin, Jaret, Jordan, Kirby, Erich, Courtney, Koree, Patrick, Brett, Sylvie, Cheyenne; step-grandchildren - Mike, Stacey; great-grandchildren - Kade, Kayla, Sadie; step-great-grandchildren - Chase, Nicolas, Amelia, Ryder. He is also survived by six brothers, James, Aime, Denis, Ovide, Robert, Emile and six sisters, Lucie, Leona, Alice, Rita, Doris and Anita. He was predeceased by his parents Ovide and Louise-Anna Coté; two brothers, Emilien and Louis; two sisters Florence and Therese; and his son-in-law Mark Sobering. Lucien began working at a young age with his father in the pulpwood business. He worked in this field until he sustained a major accident. In between this time he also worked as a car salesman in Geraldton, Ontario. Until retirement he worked as a school bus driver/supervisor. He loved sports – both participating and watching. On June 2, 2007, he alongside his father and brothers was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. Lucien, who pitched and played infield, possessed a fierce passion for the game and was often recruited by Minnesota teams. He also loved watching his children play and oftentimes coached his sons and daughters on different occasions. He played other sports including, hockey, curling and golf. He enjoyed watching his Montreal Canadiens every Saturday on Hockey Night in Canada. He loved music and playing his guitar. Cremation has taken place. Prayers will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Friday, May 4, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Sacred Heart Church in Vassar, Manitoba, Saturday, May 5, 2012, at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4G2, or a charity of one’s choice. Special thanks to the staff at Action Marguerite for their excellent care and compassion. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.
