Obituary of Peter S. Thiessen

Suddenly and peacefully, Peter went to his eternal rest. Beloved husband of Marlies, father to Wally (Candace), Louise, Dorothy (Ralf) and Rob; grandfather to Alex, Andrew, Joey (Jen; Bella, Keaton), Curtis and Cassandra (Andrew). Survived also by his brother Jack (Audrey) and sisters Anne and Agnes, in-laws, nieces and nephews, and step-mother Erika. Predeceased by his parents and brother Frank. Dad was born and raised on the family farm near Grunthal. He attended MCI for high school and later returned to teach there. He married Marlies in 1955 and they recently celebrated 58 years together. His teaching career spanned 13 years and included a principalship in Pinawa. He reinvented himself in his late 40’s as a real estate investor and developer. There he demonstrated a sixth sense for finding value and potential. That led him, then in his 70’s, to develop a subdivision in Lorette, which he was deservedly proud of. Dad was first and foremost a people person. A typical day consisted of breakfast, lunch, and coffee meetings, as well as numerous phone calls. He found people fascinating and made friends wherever he went. Dad loved music, especially classical and choral. Life didn’t get any better than seeing Fiddler on the Roof at Rainbow Stage. He loved the open road and would impulsively phone an out of province friend to say we’re coming to visit, tell mom to pack their bags and off they went. He was a free spirit, an out of the box thinker, and Blue Bomber fan. He will be sadly missed by family and friends alike. The family is deeply grateful to the many who visited dad since his stroke in early 2012. Those visits, cards and calls meant so much to him. We also thank the staff at Bethania Personal Care Home, in particular Dan and Qi who were helping him to learn to walk again. Viewing will be held Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7:00 p.m. followed by a devotional at 7:30 p.m. Funeral will be Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 11:00 a.m. Both will be held at Douglas Avenue Mennonite Church, 1517 Rothesay Street, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 200 - 6 Donald Street; Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or to Bethania Personal Care Home, 1045 Concordia Avenue , Winnipeg, MB R2K 3S7 to be used to improve their residents’ quality of life.
