Obituary of Margaret Rose Janzen (Nee Bergen)

Margaret (Marge) was the fourth child and only daughter born to Heinrich B. and Margaretha (nee Klassen) Bergen on February 28, 1944 in the Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg. If she had been born a few hours later she would have been a leap year baby. She grew up five miles west of Arnaud and she attended the Timlick school in her early years and then went on to the Arnaud school. Her high school years she attended Daniel McIntyre school in Winnipeg. In the early 1960’s she joined the work force of Montreal Trust and worked there until 1964 when she married John N Janzen of Dominion City and moved out to the farm. She was baptized on June 16, 1962 by Bishop Nick Unruh and joined the Arnaud Mennonite Church where she attended most of her life. She raised three daughters, driving them to piano and swimming lessons and also to Arnaud girl’s choir practices and performances. Holidays were very important to Mom. She enjoyed going to Ivanhoe resort in Northern Minnesota and enjoyed a week of relaxing near the beach and visiting with fellow vacationers. Later in life, Mom and Dad had the pleasure of going on several cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska and Hawaii. For short adventures, the family met in Grand Forks for some shopping, relaxing and birthday celebrations. She loved visiting and entertaining with family and friends. We remember as young kids listening to the adults cackling, laughing and playing Canasta or Yahtzee and eating Tombstone pizza to all hours of the night. She enjoyed meeting her friends for brunch, lunch and especially for dessert! In 1984 she was diagnosed with primary progressive Multiple Sclerosis. She was devastated, but with faithful support from her husband and girls, she managed to get by. When first diagnosed she was told she would probably be in a wheel chair by the time her oldest daughter graduated. She walked to all the graduations of her daughters, high school, college and University – seven in all. She also walked down the aisle to two of her daughters’ weddings. Later, when she was wheel chair bound, she still remained in good spirits and never, ever became bitter. Mom adored her grandchildren or as she liked to call them her “little angels”. (Some of them are not so little anymore.) One special angel has fond memories of riding on the back of her wheelchair. She loved to attend the grandsons’ baseball games – encouraging them to hit a home run for her. She also enjoyed attending her grandsons’ soccer games and her granddaughter’s violin performances. She enjoyed going to musicals, dramas and choir concerts. She did not let her MS keep her from attending these and other social events, senior’s lunches or church functions. At home, she was our command center. Whenever there was a gathering, all questions were directed to Mom at the kitchen table. Speaking of gatherings, many of you will know she left room for dessert. (It was the only part of the meal she ate in the hospital.) She spent much time at the kitchen table looking out the window at her bird feeders and any other wildlife that came along. “Don’t scare the birds away” or “What type of bird is that” were regular exclamations that were heard. When bigger wildlife appeared on the yard, there was cause for great excitement! We are not too sure which home care workers to thank for helping Mom coin the phrases – “Suck it up Buttercup” and “Good in the Hood”. Regardless, our family would like to thank Homecare for all the excellent and compassionate workers sent to take care of Mom throughout the years. You all had a very special place in her heart. We are also very grateful for the compassionate care by the staff at Altona Health Care Centre and Boundary Trails Health Centre. Thanks to everyone for all their support - your phone calls, emails and texts have been a solace during this difficult time. Mom is survived by her husband John, her daughters Cheryl (Al), Corinne (Lloyd) and Valerie (Lyle) and her grandchildren Dawson, Connor & Tielle Thiessen; Thomas & Hunter Reimer; four sister-in-laws and two brothers-in-law. She was predeceased by her parents, three brothers, a sister-in-law & a brother-in-law. The funeral was held on Thursday, November 28, 2013 at Arnaud Mennonite Church, Arnaud, Manitoba, with interment in summer 2014. Donations in memory of Marge may be made to MS Society or the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.
