Gary's journey on earth ended peacefully Sunday, February 26, 2012 in his Steinbach residence at the age of 55 years. Left to treasure his memory is his dear wife Karen(Dyck) and beloved children, Craig (Andrea) Bergen of Drayton Valley, Alberta, Kari Bergen of Steinbach and Ryan (Heather) Bergen of Blumenort, and ten precious grand-children, Kylie, Samson, Thomas, Alivia, Kassidy, Carson, Isaiah, Bella, Jonas, and Dallas. Gary will be deeply missed by his loving mother Jessie Bergen, and his siblings Lawrence (Irma) Bergen, Shirley (Mike) Konowalchuk, Brenda (Randy) Jaques, and his in-laws Frank and Anne Dyck, brother-in-laws Robert, James, Alan, Gary (Andrea) Dyck, as well as many other treasured relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father Jacob Bergen in 1997 and nephew Derek Cooper. Gary met the love of his life and married her on May 3, 1980 and was a member of the EEFC in Steinbach. Gary enjoyed his jobs at Able Sound, then his business Gary's Auto Sound, as well as his time at Loewen Windows. Gary loved the challenge to keep things going with his repairs around his home and vehicles but alas his bigger challenge was fighting stage 4 esophageal cancer for the last 26 months! He faced this challenge with the grit of one who knew his Heavenly Father would be with him each step of the journey. Gary knew that this world was not his home and he was just a passing through, he treasured times spent with his family and friends and cherished the ten grandchildren so special to him. Gary loved the outdoors, especially Sandilands and camping, snowmobiling and "making things work", but most of all he valued his daily walk with God. The family wishes to thank God for blessing us with such a great husband and father, and also many thanks to the wonderful people at Steinbach Cancer Care and you all, the Bergen Support Team! There will be a private family ash interment prior to the service. A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 1 at 7:00 p.m. at the Emmanuel Evangelical Free Church, 360 McKenzie Ave, Steinbach.
