Obituary of Elizabeth Regier

Elizabeth (Reimer) Regier, cherished mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, slipped gently into her heavenly Father’s presence on Thursday, March 29, 2012 at the Rest Haven Nursing Home. Left to remember her are her four children, Lorraine (Ernest Dueck), Wendy (Victor Warkentin), Eleanore (Anton Wagenhoffer) and Wayne; eleven grandchildren, Byron, Jocelyn (Nathan) and Valerie (Curtis), Gwendolyn, Marcia (Richard) and Bradley (Michelle), Karl (Shauna), Eleana (Jerry) and David, and Neil, Grant and their mother Karen; sixteen great grandchildren; one sister, Elma Leach; one brother-in-law, Al Regier; four sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Regier, Elsie Wiebe, Helen Regier and Lydia Regier; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Jacob Arthur Regier, on February 25, 1996, one grandson, Kevin Arthur Warkentin, and two great grandsons, Josiah David Payne and Finnegan Arthur D. Peters, as well as by all but one (Elma) of her seventeen siblings from a blended family of eighteen that she described as “his, hers and theirs.” She was the granddaughter of Klass R. Reimer, Steinbach’s first merchant, and Katherina (Willms), and daughter of Klaas W. Reimer, the East Reserve’s first cheese factory builder and owner (and winner of a gold medal at the butter and cheese exhibit at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York), and Margaretha (Friesen). These pioneer forebears were an inspiration for her entrepreneurial skills, and she often said that business was in her blood. As co-owner with her husband Art, she operated Betty’s Grocery (later Regier Foods) from 1947 to 1971. Her unwavering faith in God molded her roles as a daughter, faithful wife, loving mother, friend, hard working entrepreneur and conscientious messenger of the Gospel. When they sold their business in 1971, they moved to Chase, British Columbia for retirement, only to be, as she herself said, “re-fired” to represent Christ to the people of Chase in personal friendships, personal witness, kids clubs and women’s ministries. The same zeal and witness continued while in Altona, where they resided from 1987 till 1995. In 1995, she and her husband moved to Woodhaven Manor in Steinbach. Following her husband’s death in 1996, she continued to reside at Woodhaven until 2007, when she was placed in Rest Haven and where she resided till her death. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by those who remain. The family wishes to express their thanks and appreciation to the staff and volunteers of Rest Haven, who have extended themselves beyond the call of duty to our mother, grandmother and great grandmother. A special thanks also goes out to Drs. Ibrahim and Krahn. The funeral service was held Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel with interment at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach. If desired, donations may be made to Haven Group (Rest Haven Nursing Home), 177 Woodhaven Avenue, Steinbach, MB R5G 1K7.
