Obituary of Jacob Nickel

Our father, grandfather and great-grandfather Jacob Nickel died on Friday, October 8th, 2010 after living a full life of 93 years and one month. He was accompanied in his final hours by family and caregivers from Bethesda Place in Steinbach, where he lived. Jake was born at Herbert, Saskatchewan on the second of September, 1917. His parents, Cornelius and Sarah Nickel had 13 children and Jake is survived by sister Mary Hedison, brothers Cornie, Pete and Henry and sister Helen Penner. He is also survived by son Robert (Sally), daughter-in-law Tina, daughter Mary Anne Babcock (Frank) and daughter Joan. Also missing him are six grandchildren and their spouses and ten great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Kathryne (Tina) in 1999 and son Dave (Tina) in 2010. As a young man Dad was called up for thirty days training in the army. After the thirty days training he volunteered for active service. Dad spent four years of active service in Europe, 1941-45, until the Second World War ended. As Dad says, “That was some celebration”. After the war Dad worked on a farm for a year and then the Veterans Affairs set him up on a farm of his own. Dad farmed for two more years and on October 9th 1948, he and Kathryne Warkentin got married. In the spring of 1949 Dad and Mom moved to Winnipeg where he worked for Moore’s Taxi as a mechanic for a year. The next move was to the farm near Steinbach to help his father-in-law, Isaac A. Warkentin with the farm. Dad spent most of his working career in Steinbach as a carpenter, retiring at age 65. Dad took great pride in his work and also taught carpentry for fourteen years during the winter. After retirement Dad and Mom moved their trailer to Caliper Lake, Ontario where they spent 15 wonderful retirement summers fishing and relaxing with the odd cross-word puzzle and lots of visits from children and grand-children. Dad was really lonely after Mom died in 1999. He often commented that he would love to join her in heaven and wondered why he was the one left behind. His faith in God saw him through the lonely times and his deteriorating health. In his final years at Bethesda Place in Steinbach he received wonderful care, for which the family extends their sincere appreciation. The funeral service for Jacob Nickel will be held Thursday, October 14th, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Steinbach Mennonite Church, 345 Loewen Blvd, Steinbach with Reverend Gary Martens officiating. Interment at Heritage Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee, 134 Plaza Drive; Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9 Dad, enjoy your new home! We love you!
